The Guardians is book one in the Guardians series by Mandy M. Roth.
The author was offering up many of her titles for free on Authors Direct a while back and I decide to pick up a few in audio to give them a try. I’ve enjoyed Roth in the past and was interested to try out this new series.
The Guardians had it’s good and bad moments. Their where things I enjoyed and others that where odd. It didn’t help that the story felt disjoined and that the relationships between everyone introduced where confusing.
Madelyn Mason, is the only female Guardian in a sea of males. Brady is her friend and roommate. Madelyn wants to tell Brady who she is, but humans can’t know about the supernatural world. He’s been in her life a long time and has put off telling her who he is, until she is ready to see him as more. Their relationship is friends to lovers.
Their is a sea of secrets being kept from Madelyn. Everyone in her life is keeping something from her. Even with the knowledge that she gains she can’t connect the pieces. We get information showing her past, who she is, what she is to become, and information on her mate. It was a dump of information on the reader and characters. I didn’t feel it was spread out enough. Just an overload of information coming all at once. When things do start coming out I felt that Madelyn was way to complacent in her reaction. She just accepted it all. I felt she needed to have more of a reaction like a smart ass comment or get a little mad at all the secrets being kept from her.
The author also introduces a plethora of characters. We get God’s, Powers, lycons, vampires, and more. It was a bit overwhelm all these characters and what they can do and their relationships to Madelyn.
Last, Brady and Madelyn’s relationship is an up and down ride. One minute they get along; then something happens and their not sure. I will say that the sex is steamy and hot.
Narration: Now I’ve only ever listened to audios on Hoopla, Overdrive, or Audible apps never on Authors Direct until now. I had some trouble with the audio. It was choppy, disjointed, and didn’t flow. I tried it in 1.1x, 1.2x & 1.3x, but it still had all those issues so, I continued to listen in the 1.0x.
Sarah Van Sweden’s narration was just ok. Her tone and pacing to discern each character was minimal, but became more pronounced as the story progressed. I did notice that she did tiny pauses at each syllable and that each word was articulated; which left me knowing that the text was being read. It made the story disjointed and upset the flow.
The Guardians was an ok listen, but at this time I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

Great
I really enjoyed the book
It’s very captivating and brilliant in the writing and story telling. Enjoy
Guardian Madelyn and her human(so she thought) heartthrob, Brady find excitement, drama, and love in this action-packed book. I really enjoyed the characters and the great plot was well-written.
If Mandy Roth wrote train schedules I would start reading train schedules! Thanks.
Good book, I thought there too many supernatural characters were introduced, BUT if its the beginning of a series, it would make sense. I will have to check for a follow-up book.
Mandy Roth’s Urban Fantasies are AMAZING!
The Guardians by Mandy M. Roth
I have liked many other stories by this author. I liked the blurb and thought this had potential. It just wasn’t for me. I listened to the audio version of this story and I’m not sure if it was the narration or not, but it just didn’t connect for me.

Action-packed, erotically charged… winning combination!!!
Supernaturals abound in this stonkingly good story.
Madelyn Mia is your average, every day, lone female guardian, surrounded by kickbutt males wherever she goes. The light in her deadly world is her roommate and best friend Brady, a Hollywood actor. No spoilers but lets just say this girl has access to hot and sexy shifters, vampires and a sex nymph or two.
Brady is one very sexy and famous movie star but what else is he hiding?
I literally laughed out loud, always the sign of a good book in my opinion and I loved the snarky but also vulnerable heroine and our Hollywood actor but very down-to-earth heart-throb hero.. Brilliant back story and lots of twist and turns and “WTF” moments!
What u waiting for… go buy it!!
I loved this book. Madelyn is a guardian, she protects humans while trying to keep her identity a secret from her roommate, who she believes is human, Brady. Brady is a Lycan and knows who is mate is and is waiting for her to be ready for him. This book had many twist and turns, you meet her mate, she rediscovers her real family, and there are great battle scenes. The secondary characters were also very well written and you fall in love with them as well. I do not want to give away any spoilers but I loved this story and I am looking forward to the next books in the series. Mandy leaves you wanting/demanding more and I cannot wait to read the stories she has in store for the secondary characters in this book.
I enjoyed reading this book , it is filled with action and adventure. The interaction and chemistry between the characters is wonderful. I can’t wait for more from this author. I received this book as a FREE copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Anything you can do…
Maddie was so much fun to read about, I love snarky women. Having a powerful bloodline but having it kept hidden to protect her, Maddie learns to live between two worlds. She has powerful friends who watch over her but when push comes to shove, she can take care of herself.
This started out with an interesting story idea, as I got further in, the tone and feel of the book seemed to go more into a teenager mode. The ending felt rushed.
Got through 3 chapters and nothing was happening except sexual tension between the two characters.
