“No fantasy writer working today has a defter touch with Irish magic” (Morgan Llywelyn, author of Lion of Ireland). Set against the colorful and magical backdrop of Ireland, The Grey Horse chronicles a time when the Irish people suffered under harsh English overlords who sought to destroy their culture and way of life. In the Irish town of Carraroe, a magnificent, completely grey stallion … magnificent, completely grey stallion appears. The horse brings with him the promise of better times and magical happenings, for he is actually the shape-shifted form of Ruairi MacEibhir, journeyed to such a time of danger in order to win the hand of the woman he loves.

I enjoy R A MacAvoy’s work, and this book was no exception. The beautiful, complicated tapestry that is Irish history is nicely woven into this tale of love where you’re not expecting, or even looking for it.
Anything by MacAvoy is worth reading. Anything.
Had a really hard time getting into it and finally gave up!
RA Macavoy has written a number of really interesting books aside from scifi. This one is an Irish tale about a pooka and an Irishman. Great fun. You might also like her Damiano series and the Black Dragon books, Tea with a Black Dragon and Twist the Rope.Very good stuff. Tea with a Black Dragon takes place in a fictional Sunnyvale/Mountain View …
Super!
This is one of the few books by MacAvoy that actually still works 30 years later since it was published (unlike Tea with a Black Dragon). Set in a historical time period of Ireland’s recent past it deals with the tensions of natives with the English with a dose of fantasy.
Lots of real horse information for horse lovers who get sick and tired of …
I was completely hooked very early. I loved the scene where the transformed horse had to shift back to human form to avoid being castrated! Every part of the story is a keeper!
I really like R A MacAvoy’s characters.
Boring
Retell of an old Irish folktale.
Just wonderful. Special people and horses and communities brought together. I want to share this but can’t let it go.
I really enjoyed this book. It was different and very entertaining
The Grey Horse takes the reader into the lives of an elderly horse trainer and his wife, in the midst of the intrigues surrounding the Irish bid for independence. But the Grey Horse is not what he seems, and his attempts to woo the girl of this dreams are about to lead him into more than he bargained for.
Couldn’t get ino it. 8
All her books are good. I liked Black Dragon best.
Great writer and neat story. This book is a very pleasant and easy way to relax.
Hard to follow, not an easy read. Too many strange names which became distracting. Lot’s of terms, that unless your a horse trainer, are not understandable. I spent more time looking up words than trying to follow the “story?”.
great kids story
My personal favorite of all her books. Wonderful mixture of Irish folklore and slice of life of that period.
A bit disconnected and it was difficult to follow the plot
