Pat Conroy’s New York Times–bestselling coming-of-age novel about a son’s struggle to escape the domineering expectations of his volatile military father Marine Col. Bull Meecham commands his home like a soldiers’ barracks. Cold and controlling, but also loving, Bull has complicated relationships with each member of his family—in particular, his eldest son, Ben. A born athlete who desperately …
A born athlete who desperately seeks his father’s approval, Ben is determined to break out from the colonel’s shadow. With guidance from teachers at his new school, he strives to find the courage to stand up to his father once and for all.
Inspired by Pat Conroy’s own difficult relationship with his father, The Great Santini is a captivating and unflinching portrayal of modern family, and a moving novel of a son determined to become his own man.

Second time that I’ve read this book. Pat Conroy is one of the most original story-tellers I’ve come across – one of my all time favorites. I would also recommend Prince of Tides, both have horrific tragedies but the families seem like they’re your family……….you KNOW these people when you’re done reading their story.
Pat Conroy is an American Treasure. His characters are funny poignoit and joyful. Make me laugh and cry while thanking God I wS not the only one with a wacky family. An American story
Not my best read
I enjoyed reading this book
A classic
I love everything Pat Conroy ever wrote. The literary world lost an incredible voice when Pat died.
Pat Conroy is a great American novelist and his works are all wonderful. The Great Santini is about a family that has problems like many others and the story is in how they deal with their problems and how they end up with each other as strong as ever. A really good book.
Very un-politically correct!
Conroy wrote wonderful books. Have read them all and consistently found him to be extraodinary in his storytelling abilities.
A fairly academic review of the history of interpretations of the Book of Revelation. A tad bit overwritten and repetitive in parts but generally a good and informative read.
