Soon to be an original series starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine! Robert Jordan’s #1 New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time®, continues as Rand al’Thor and his companions set out to retrieve a powerful magical artifact from The Dark One’s Shadowspawn in The Great Hunt. For centuries, gleemen have told the tales of The Great Hunt of the Horn. So many tales about each … So many tales about each of the Hunters, and so many Hunters to tell of…
Now the Horn itself is found: the Horn of Valere long thought only legend, the Horn which will raise the dead heroes of the ages.
And it is stolen.
In pursuit of the thieves, Rand al’Thor is determined to keep the Horn out of the grasp of The Dark One. But he has also learned that he is The Dragon Reborn–the Champion of Light destined to stand against the Shadow time and again. It is a duty and a destiny that requires Rand to uncover and master magical capabilities he never imagined he possessed.
Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time® has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters. The Wheel of Time series is and ever expanding and growing experience. You actually feel as though you are a part of the story. The plot never lingers or drags on but is always progressive. You definitely get your money’s worth out of this series through the entertainment value and the fact that each book is usually 50+ chapters long.

I still have many explosions going on inside my mind!
Not sure how I will write this review without giving any spoilers. A complex plot from the first book (The Eye of The World) gets more complex in an amazing way. The growth in the characters is so evident, not due to time difference because this continues where the first book ended but because of how mature the characters got due to the circumstances they have faced.
“Well, the sword that could not be broken was shattered in the end, sheepherder, but it fought the Shadow to the last. There is one rule, above all others, for being a man.”
In chapter 8 called The Dragon Reborn, tears were coming out of my eyes uncontrollably not because the chapter had any heartbreaking or sad scene. I just don’t know. I had all those mixed feelings for no particular reason. It felt I was there with them. That is how Robert Jordan’s writing made me get so engaged in every word and emotion.
So many new characters appear in this book. Many of them are so important to the story and I expect them to be recurring characters in the next books. Like the first book, this one is filled with lots of descriptions and details. So it might not appeal to every reader. For me, it all depends on the writing. If the writing clicks with me then I know the descriptive settings will be a winner for me. Fortunately, it is with Jordan’s writing style.
“And at the end of every life, as he lay dying, as he drew his final breath, a voice whispered in his ear. I have won again, Lews Therin. Flicker”
I love all the characters, I can’t even decide who is a favorite. They are all very unique and exciting. I just wish Moiraine and Lan had more appearances in this book like they did in the first one. Some of the shocking things that happen in the second half of the book to some of the characters are disturbing. You will know what I mean if you have read the book or when you reach that part when you read it.
“Soon comes the day all shall be free. Even you, and even me. Soon comes the day all shall die. Surely you, but never I.
Padan Fain”
Usually, second books in a series suffer from slow down or lack of events as they serve as a bridge to the third book but The Great Hunt is nothing like that. It is a completely incredible ride that will cause your mind to blow from epicness! A wonderful sequel to a wonderful book!
5 GREAT STARS!
Excellent second volume!
Definitely where the series starts to pick up!
Loved the entire series.
My brothers and I have read all 14 books a few times through over the decades. You have to be dedicated though, this is not light reading.
I loved the first book in the Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. The Great Hunt was very good, but not quite as good as the first one. As new books came out, I bought them and read them. Each book seemed to be filled with more ‘fluff’ and less story. I could barely get through the seventh book, the Crown of Swords. I bought the eight book, The Path of Daggers, as an $11 audio book and couldn’t get through a quarter of it. It was filled with tons of stuff that didn’t relate to the main plot. ‘When will you get an end to it?’ I kept asking myself. As they have released book fourteen, long after Robert Jordan’s death, apparently there will be no end to it.
Best fantasy series
Like the characters, engrossed in the world building, makes me want to read more.
