The exemplary novel of the Jazz Age, F. Scott Fitzgeralds’ third book, The Great Gatsby (1925), stands as the supreme achievement of his career. T. S. Eliot read it three times and saw it as the “first step” American fiction had taken since Henry James; H. L. Mencken praised “the charm and beauty of the writing,” as well as Fitzgerald’s sharp social sense; and Thomas Wolfe hailed it as … Fitzgerald’s “best work” thus far. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when, The New York Times remarked, “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s that resonates with the power of myth. A novel of lyrical beauty yet brutal realism, of magic, romance, and mysticism, The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature.

This book was so amazing! The ending really had me wanting more.
A good read of the writing of the “Jazz age”.. May have lost some in the time past but very good.
This is one of the most terrible books I’ve ever read. It’s just a bunch of rich people complaining about their lives.
I LOVED this book. Luckily I had not seen the movie so was able to fully use my imagination. I grieved for him and his pain. I went on to read a few other F. Scott Fitzgerald books and developed pity for the idle rich.
Great time piece!
The Great Gatsby is my favorite book of all time. I love Fitzgerald’s imagery and vocabulary. He was truly a master craftsman.
Classic – the last page is the best
How do you freaking review TGG? It’s TGG!!
I’ve read it three times and loved it every time.
It’s considered a classic, but I really didn’t care that much for the story or characters.
F. Scott Fitzgerald paints wonderful images with his words. And the story is engrossing.
my favorite book of all time
I was first introduced to The Great Gatsby in 9th grade and fell in love. I’ve read multiple times but, as I get older I have become aware that it isn’t the American masterpiece we all except as. It not that great, just as none of his other works are. It’s really very trivial but, with a beautiful and vivid description of the Jazz Age.
Ok
You are not a reader if you haven’t read Gatsby. Such a tight, lyric novel that all Americans should read because if its take on the American dream.
I loved reading this novel, ‘The Great Gatsby!’ It tells the story of a man that holds out hope of a woman that he once loved, as he hosts the best parties during the Jazz Age at this time in the hopes of seeing her again. Definitely a great read, I would recommend this!
One of F. Scott’s best, I think… daisy… love her! Love reading about that era. Truly an all time classic. Too bad Redford and Decaprio ruined the story….
So many people rave about this novel, but I don’t care for it. Most of the characters were unlikeable flighty society people with no desire to see the Depression surrounding them. In fact, their attitude was that “those” people were there to be exploited, run over, ignored. Gatsby’s character was tragic in a way, but in transforming himself …
This is a really good book to read, but I found I enjoyed the movie more.
I loved it. One of my favorite books
