Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

Good characters that you actually feel for.Realistic portrayal of Alaska in the early days.
This book touched me in so many ways. Human struggles, real life issues, and I felt as if I was there. What will you feel?
Kristin Hannah guts me again. I just…just…Gah! I hit the 95% mark and it was like a waterfall came down my face. I cried and cried and I won’t say at which part because I would never want to ruin it for someone else. Her characters had depth, conflict like I’ve never read before, and for each there was a reason to root for, and simultaneously want to strangle. The Great Alone lands alongside The Nightingale for top ten books.
Perhaps one of the best books I have ever read. The adventure, the characters, the harshness of Alaska and life with it, could be the personal notes for me too.
Quite informative about Alaska and the heartbreak of abuse
This was “I will just read a little bit longer” book. Great description of Alaska before the world discovery of this stunning place. The characters were believable and met their challenges with real life solutions.
Not one of her best.
Kristin Hannah’s descriptions of Alaska’s landscape are so vividl that it’s clear she has had first hand exposure to the area. Add to that flawed characters faced with life-threatening challenges, and the result is a grippingly intense book.
Did not want to put this book down. Great story
This was such a sweet book. Makes you feel you are living her new life in Savanah,
I loved reading it
She has done it again. Just finished this trying to read through tears, like most of hers. This will join my list of most recommended reads for sure. It’s gonna be hard to get into my next one, yes, one of those. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful book! Couldn’t put it down!
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the woods…
This is a hard one to review. I could not put it down even though I wanted to do just that. I cried for some of the characters. I wanted to shoot some of the characters. It is not a book for the faint of heart. A wife that loves and sticks by a husband with serious war related mental issues…..a child that is taken out of her comfort zone and moved to outback Alaska….a husband that can’t fit into society and a cast of wonderful characters that try to understand and help this family. Beautifully written as only Kristin Hannah can do.
Amazing story
Another amazing page turner from Kristin Hannah. Expert at developing characters and telling a strong story!
I intend to reread this book because I want to be sure I got all the bits and pieces that made it so wonderful. I cried a bit, I learned a lot about Alaskan life off the grid, and how a strong child who grew to be a woman in this atmosphere survived.
love everything this author writes
This is one of those stories that stays with you long after the last page. One of my favorite authors, always captivating.
loved it!!!
