Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

Loved this book
Another winner from Kristin Hannah. I finished this book in one sitting.
I love the writings of Kristin Hannah, and this book was no exception. I became so engrossed in this book, that I felt as if I were in Alaska. I heartily recommend it.
This book was fantastic from the 1st page to the last!
Could’ t put this book down. I wanted know what would happen
I love all of Kristin Hannah’s books. This one was so, so good. The characters were well developed and the book itself is a page-turner.
boring, typical.
I am a huge Kristin Hannah fan… but this wasn’t up to what I expect in her books. The story line was unique and gave a great perspective of Alaskan life. If you are looking for a book that feels like Night Road or the Nightingale, be prepared for a different reading experience.
Kind of sad. Man returns from Vietnam and moves family to Alaska. The story started well, but after a while it became predictable. It is a family with domestic problems, but the ending was less bitter than I expected.
I kept reading steadily. In other words, I couldn’t put it down, but not the best book I’ve read.
Best book ever!
Wonderfully written with an insight into life in Alaska. The reader is drawn into the characters and you become them!
I like most of Kristin Hannah’s books, and this one is no exception. You just never know what goes on in the human mind.
All of Kristin Hannah’s books that I have read have not disappointed. I enjoyed seeing a side of Alaska that visitors do not see. For me, I did not have the emotional attachment to the characters that I felt for those in The Nightingale.
Gave a great insight of backwoods Alaska in the 70’s and PTSD.
A wonderful historical novel about Alaska!
Loved it!
Great writing and great story. Pretty much true to mountain living.
My favorite book of the year.
The Great Alone takes place in Alaska where a family of three go make a settlement. The story is a wonderful book club choice. It’s about love between mother and father , daughter and father, daughter and mother. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions and Lonny, the daughter has to make several of the most important ones of her life.
Loved this book and how the author has such a great way of describing and the story just flowed.
