Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

Good read
One of my favorite authors. She never disappoints me.
Loved reading about alaska. Reminded me of travelling there and how utterly beautiful it is and also that it must have been very challenging to settle there especially with untreated PTSD..
A story about an Incredibly dysfunctional family. I felt it was predictable. Gave insight as to what life is like in Alaska. I felt the last 20% or so left gaps in the story about the characters life. Certainly not the best book ever that I have read but ok. Perhaps I am tired of reading about dysfunctional people, some very weak in character and also predictable.
It felt like you ere really there. Very moving. Sensational!!!!!!!
Very good
Outstanding book! The characters are so rich, so engaging, so believable.
I couldn’t put it down…read it in two days.
Intense.
Great story
I learned a lot about living in the Alaskan wild country as well as the strength of the human spirit.
Hard to read. Usually enjoy Kristin Hannah books. Didn’t so much this one
Wonderful, gripping story, which lifts the reader to hope and root for the heroine, Leni.
Wonderful description of homesteading in Alaska and the challenges of surviving the winters.
This was a little depressing.
The wild majesty of the Alaskan frontier and the heart-wrenching tension of a family in crisis kept me enthralled and on edge right up to the end. Exquisite.
I didn’t want to put it down. Alaska was one of the characters and very expressively described. I need to go back (in the summer). The human story was tear jerking and kept me reading!
This was a book that grabbed me from the beginning. It had great character development. The book made Alaska come alive to the reader. Hannah is one of the great writers of today.
Exceptional book! One of better books I have read in a long time! You grow so fond of the characters, you are sad to see the story end!
This was one of the best books I have ever read!
Close to home for me. I lived in Alaska back in the early 70s as a 13 year-old. I could picture and relate to the characters and the landscape. Wonderful.
