In Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone, a desperate family seeks a new beginning in the near-isolated wilderness of Alaska only to find that their unpredictable environment is less threatening than the erratic behavior found in human nature.#1 New York Times Instant Bestseller (February 2018)A People “Book of the Week”Buzzfeed’s “Most Anticipated Women’s Fiction Reads of 2018”Seattle Times’s “Books … Women’s Fiction Reads of 2018”

Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

Wonderful book! Especially if you’ve ever been to Alaska, you will enjoy it. Great story and great characters.
Great story. Felt I was living in Alaska myself from the descriptions.
Very good book!
Great book!!!
Well written. Could not put it down. Another winner.
One of my favorites for 2018! Interesting characters and story line.
Great characters dealing with difficult emotions. The author put the reader in the middle.
When I started this book (recommended by a good friend) my husband and I were planning a possible trip to Alaska so was really excited to read such great descriptions of the State’s basic wilderness, weather and residents. Add to all of that the type of people that would actually be able to survive all of those things along with a story that was riveting. I totally recommend this book!!!! Cannot wait to visit this State!
Fabulous story!! Unforgettable and a must read. Didn’t think Kristin Hannah could top The Nightingale but The Great Alone is magnificent!! Wow!!
A coming of age story set in a not so typical place. A place where most don’t stay and some don’t survive.
Leni, along with her parents, Cora & Ernt, leave Seattle to homestead in Alaska. Ernt, a Vietnam POW, inherits some land from one of his war buddies. He suffers from PTSD, paranoia, rage, and alcoholism.
Alaska is another character in the book, and I loved that. It was actually the perfect read for when the snow started falling!
I enjoyed this book. I felt myself struggling to understand the mother, as a mother. But I did understand based on what we know about victims of domestic violence. The way the author talked about Alaska was beautiful. I fell in love with Leni, and Tom Walker, and Matthew, and Large Marge.
I recommend this book!
The fortitude of the two main female characters, the generosity of spirit of the local people, and the commitment of the heart made this a wonderful experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was action packed and very interesting.
This book makes you feel the entire gamut of emotions. I think it is the best book I have read in a long time!
All her books are so good. The kind that make you want to keep reading even though you are fighting to stay awake.
remember enjoying it but read awhile ago
Wonderful! Very informative about life in Alaska. Sad at the same time about the Vietnam Vet.
Kristin Hannah does it again! As good as The Nightingale but completely different.
great book.
I love adventure into wild places, and this book delivers. Great winter read!
A true-feeling saga of life in Alaska. Quite enjoyable and unique.
