Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

I learned so much about a remote area of Alaska. Long book, but I enjoyed the story of three members of a family.
She did it again! Wonderful story! I will always read Kristin Hannah. Her books never disappoint.
this book was too graphic. It really highlighted the horrible effects that war has on a young man. It also depicts the love a woman has for her husband and the sacrifice she makes to let him try and work out his demons.
This book really drove home the long dark season of winter in Alaska and how that can impact personalities. I was very impressed with the way a community pulled together in stressful times and supported each other; we need this kind of example in this country now.
Unfortunately predictable abuse for women.
Couldn’t put it down. Be prepared for emotions to run deep.
fast paced read in unique environment
I loved this book. The story was easy to read but fast paced. The descriptions of Alaska made me feel like I was there.
Loved it! Didn’t want it to end.
I was surprised how much I liked it….one of those that was hard to put down!
An interesting read about the life in Alaska. Characters well defined . Adventurous in that I could not guess where the story would take me. Would recommend to a friend.
I think it was a great book. We read it for book club and we all loved it. My favorite thing about this author is all her books are different and so far the ones I read were wonderful.
I enjoyed this book set in Alaska! The family struggle to survive is magnified by violence inside the home! How the young girl managed to survive is an amazing story.
Loved this book. Highly recomend
Two themes in this book interest d me. 1. Survival and 2. A family affected by PTSD.
I seldom give a book 5 stars – This was not my typical read. Beautifully written and pulled at the heart strings
Another great book by Kristan Hannah.
Gave a great overview of Alaska winters and how it can affect PTSD individuals.
The Great Alone is a work of art. Kristin Hannah keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. She characterizes the family beautifully. The Great Alone will keep you second-guessing throughout the entire story.
Wonderful story telling. Characters were complex and unexpected. The Alaskan wilderness was described in great detail for those who dared to live off-the-grid.
Not for the timid or lazy. ultimately there was a love story with many obstacles to overcome. This is my second book by this author and will not be the last.
