Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

I began reading Kristin Hannah since The Nightingale and have never been disappointed.
Her books always grab me and keep getting better. Her family have ties to the area, in Alaska, so you really feel like you went there in your mind.
One of the best books I have read in a while. Recommended it for our local library book club which we will do for April. Loved the information about Alaska, so interesting. (Might visit, but definitely would not live there!) Wonderful characters.
Not my favorite book by this author.
This was a very good book. I think it was a little slow but it kept me wanting to finish it. I am glad I kept with it.
I could not read many of the pages that detailed the domestic violence. I found the book very sad, but the ending was uplifting. This writer is not afraid to tackle the tough subjects.
I really, really liked the book. I ordered an audiobook and listen in a couple of days as I was drawn in. It was one of the best books I’ve read or listen to.
I have liked all of Kristin Hannah’s books, however this one was too twisted with violence and mental illness. Scary.
Wonderful book finished it in 2 days. Would love to read more of this authors books.
SHE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO WRITE A BAD BOOK
An amazing eye opening look at people who decide to go off the grid to escape from their own demons. The author gives us a look at the beauty and desolation of living in the backwoods of Alaska. One of the main characters suffers from PTSD because of his experience in the Vietnam War. The story centers around his abusive relationship with his wife and how his warped thoughts affect all around him. At times I couldn’t pick the book down, conversely I had to put it aside sometimes for fear of what might happen next.
sad that this societal issues are not addressed and have support systems that work.
This story reveals how master parents can destroy their children’s lives. Love makes the characters Jean things they wouldn’t normally do
This was a great book, nothing less than expected from an excellent author. The magnitude of the problems faced by the main character and her parents – puts things into perspective. The hippie-years of parenting that were described were a long ways away from peace and love. Highly recommend it!
This book had me emotionally involved within the first couple of chapters. Great characters with an interesting and exciting plot. I loved the ending.
I love all her books!
A compelling read about the impact of abuse.
Unfortunately a formulaic ending. A great read to that point. Captures Alaskan living with great feeling.
I loved this book. Can’t wait to see the movie.
Hard to put down
