Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.
Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.
In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.
But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

wow what an awesome read! this is a departure for Kristen Hannah , but oh my goodness! you will not put it down, and you will be sad to finish it!
Another great Kristin Hannah book–just wish she could write them faster!!!
Kristin Hannah is a master story teller and writer!! I have loved every book she has written! She totally reels you into the story until you feel you are a part of it!! This book is an amazing look into human nature and has such clarity of the characters, you feel you know each one!!
This is my first Kristin Hannah novel. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about her, so I was very excited to get started. Unfortunately, it took me awhile to get into the book. I should say, Historical Fiction is not my preferred genre and that had a lot to do with it. Also, there is a trigger of abuse in there for me. That being said, when I did get into the story, I found myself enthralled.
There is a lot of pain and loss and learning throughout the story. There were parts that made me downright angry and parts that made me weep. There’s also a love story. The parts with Leni and Matthew were definitely my favorite and I could have read a story about just their relationship easily.
I love the lessons in forgiveness and moving on from tragedies. And for people who enjoy historical fiction or tales of Alaskan wilderness, this book will surely become a favorite.
Another page turner!
