“Carter’s writing is on target.” –Publishers WeeklyA curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That’s how people describe Garrison Gage, and that’s when they’re being charitable. After his wife’s brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the hobbled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next … Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife’s death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl’s murder.

“The Gray and Guilty Sea is quite an enjoyable novel that engages a reader on multiple levels.” —Stimulated Outlet Book Reviews
“Carter’s outstanding debut crime novel set on the Oregon coast and starring a misanthropic former detective is as much a fascinating character study as it is an original story.” —Michael J. Totten, author of The Road to Fatima Gate

Somewhat slow moving.
A good book to read, easy to get through.
Good read
I loved this series!!
In some portions it drags descriptions, people out for too long. It almost loses the reader. But, just when ready to put it down, the author draws you back into the story.
Enjoyed very much. I was surprised at the end.
What could have been an excellent read was overrun by bad Hollywoodesque characters propped up by second rate snarky repertoire. The author was working overtime filling dialogue and descriptions with unoriginal and stereotypical imagery. Not only was the book a cheaply derived paper doll copy of a poorly written and acted Chief Stone mystery, but …
I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but I have to admit I kept wanting to turn the pages. While this isn’t an extraordinary storyline, it kept me entertained and it didn’t matter that I didn’t read the previous book. It was pretty quick reading and I actually got to liking the characters. I just wish some of the characters had been a little …
I was drawn in from the first page. The descriptions of the characters and the surrounding areas put me in the story.
Great story line. You wanted to keep reading to see what was going to happen.
It was a good story but took a long time to pique my interest. Wasn’t a major page turner.
This book was very good. It holds your interest and is having d to put down. Really enjoyed it.
This book will keep you up late at night. In more ways than one! Fast paced and packed with surprise twists and turns.
Enjoyable. Will read more by this author.
Lightweight. Since I happen to live in the location in the book, it felt overwhelmingly forced to “almost rename” and continually mention locations. Did not add to the story just padded.
Rather boring actually. Not sure why I keept reading it till the end,
I read for entertainment and I was entertained by this story. I liked that the hero cares enough about a young woman’s death that he overcomes his own reticence to be in society. I enjoyed this book.
Good drama
Love the characters and the authors writing style….He has a new Fan!!
I really enjoyed the characters, truly enjoyed this book!
