“Carter’s writing is on target.” –Publishers WeeklyA curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That’s how people describe Garrison Gage, and that’s when they’re being charitable. After his wife’s brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the hobbled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next … Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife’s death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl’s murder.

“The Gray and Guilty Sea is quite an enjoyable novel that engages a reader on multiple levels.” —Stimulated Outlet Book Reviews
“Carter’s outstanding debut crime novel set on the Oregon coast and starring a misanthropic former detective is as much a fascinating character study as it is an original story.” —Michael J. Totten, author of The Road to Fatima Gate

Enjoyed the locale
Enjoyed the book and would recommend
The plot flowed well, although it was sometimes slower than others. The characters were interesting and fairly well developed to whom I could relate. I did enjoy it very much!
A good read, enjoyed the book
Interesting story line. Plot sometimes confusing due to too much irrelevant detail.
I can’t wait to read the second one in this series. Loved the sense of place (the Oregon Coast) which was very true (the names of the towns are made up but recognizable to anyone who has lived in Oregon. And the main character is one I want to get to know even better. Highly recommend this one!
The author’s gripping style will bring me back for more of his books.
Not fabulous but pretty good.
LOVE this series

A reclusive down-on-life PI comes back to life – awesome progression and atmosphere

Do what is right, follow your heart. You can do hard things.
I could almost smell the sea air and feel the dampness while reading! Seemed like I was right there on the Oregon coast with the main character.
Living in the Pacific NW I really enjoyed that this took place on the Oregon coast. This was a very good action tale. Easy read, moves along well, looking forward to the next in the series.
