“Carter’s writing is on target.” –Publishers WeeklyA curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That’s how people describe Garrison Gage, and that’s when they’re being charitable. After his wife’s brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the hobbled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next … Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife’s death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl’s murder.

“The Gray and Guilty Sea is quite an enjoyable novel that engages a reader on multiple levels.” —Stimulated Outlet Book Reviews
“Carter’s outstanding debut crime novel set on the Oregon coast and starring a misanthropic former detective is as much a fascinating character study as it is an original story.” —Michael J. Totten, author of The Road to Fatima Gate

I find the main character endearing with his wise- cracking ways.
It was unpredictable and witty. I found it enjoyable would read more of this authors books.
First in a series featuring a curmudgeonly retired private detective who’s moved to the Oregon coast to escape bad memories but alas can’t help but be drawn into solving a murder. A decent read with some interesting plot twists to set up next book.
A great “character” book that drew me in and kept me wondering to the end. I very much enjoyed the read!
Held my attention from first chapter
It was well written, leading up to an unexpected ending. Very good book!! I enjoyed it.
Gritty… good characters and suspense.
This book had me hooked on the very first page. I liked all the main characters and enjoyed the way the story was told. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
I’ve dowloaded this book for years but for some reason have never even started it. Until today and I finished it today! I did have one issue. When describing the main character Garrison Gage, it came across as if he was an octogenarian, not man in his forties! Interesting plot and twists I didn’t see coming. I plan to purchase other books by this …
I found a new author that I really enjoy!!!
Started out slow, but really enjoyed it after a few pages.
This is an awesome mystery with well developed characters, great plot and excellent writing. A must read.
Interesting premise with unpredictable, but not unbelievable plot. The characters are real, human, relatable. The novel kept me turning the pages….I love how Carter crafts his story using beautiful language to explore the darkness we all have to face in our lives.
Well written
Nice crisp clean writing, good story line. Mostly this was great construction of characters and their picadillos. Loved it!
Great mystery with many twists and turns.
Enjoyed the characters and the storyline. Will read more books by this author
I really enjoyed this book and was drawn to the character of Gage right away. He was a very likable guy. Maybe they’ve corrected the foul language some people have reviewed about, but I found no foul language in this book. There were a few missed words as some also reviewed but they were minimal and did not interfere with the story.
Great mystery
I loved the book, it held my interest all the way thru would love to read some more of the series.
