“Carter’s writing is on target.” –Publishers WeeklyA curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That’s how people describe Garrison Gage, and that’s when they’re being charitable. After his wife’s brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the hobbled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next … Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife’s death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl’s murder.

“Carter’s outstanding debut crime novel set on the Oregon coast and starring a misanthropic former detective is as much a fascinating character study as it is an original story.” —Michael J. Totten, author of The Road to Fatima Gate

He’s a grumpy curmudgeon refusing to use technology — not even a land line — yet I ended up loving him! What a great story with an unusual set of characters.

Interesting characters. Described scenery very well. I enjoyed it
Should be a 6 star
Suspenseful with lots of twists and turns. Loved the one liners. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Lots of action to draw you in deeper. A great who done it.
Good mystery with compelling characters and a fast paced plot.

An interesting protagonist, looking forward to reading about him again.
Interesting and witty characters. Read about the first third the first day, then couldn’t stop reading the second day until the book was finished (which was about 3;30 a.m.)

I loved the old grimudgen detective and the way he wouldn’t let go.
I absolutely loved the characters in this novel, especially Garrison Gage! He has such a fine combination of traits, especially for a detective. The storyline was also very entertaining and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
I read this a while back, but I remember it well.
Powerful writing, Excellent Characterization
Just my favourite kind of book! Garrison Gage is quite an interesting character. The story is very entertaining and suspenseful.
What I liked best was the author’s style of writing. It is very insightful into human nature and pain. It reminded me a little bit of Agatha Christie and Erle Stanley …
Author is a great writer.
