“Carter’s writing is on target.” –Publishers WeeklyA curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That’s how people describe Garrison Gage, and that’s when they’re being charitable. After his wife’s brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the hobbled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next … Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife’s death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation – forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl’s murder.

“The Gray and Guilty Sea is quite an enjoyable novel that engages a reader on multiple levels.” —Stimulated Outlet Book Reviews
“Carter’s outstanding debut crime novel set on the Oregon coast and starring a misanthropic former detective is as much a fascinating character study as it is an original story.” —Michael J. Totten, author of The Road to Fatima Gate

An interesting main character and why he acts the way he acts.
Also a good story.
I enjoyed this book. A good who done it with a good twisting story.
Did not finish.
Captures your interest from page 1
Liked it very much. I found it sad because it reminded me of how pitiful some people can be when they enable sick behavior in others under the guise of love.
Kept me riveted until the end. The reason for the 4 stars is, as good as it is it falls a little short in character development (although to be fair I do believe this is remedied in future …
This is part of a series. I have read all the books in this series and another one he writes. I would recommend this author highly.
To much Robert B Parker for me I burned out on him a while back. I don’t hate it it’s just not the genre I am into at this time.
It had an interesting story line from the beginning. Made me want too read the next one in the series
This could be a play. We find out so much about everyone and the hero can “read” everyone . Everyone trusts him immediately and women fall for him. Descriptions beautifully done but a bit too glib.
Good read
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time! Beautifully developed characters, strong plot and absolutely fantastic descriptive writing. I will definitely be reading this super author again!
Very well written, very believable characters, Would highly recommend this book.
This book had an interesting plot with a lot of action. The main characters were likable and easy to relate to. The one thing I found difficult to deal with was the main character’s alcoholism. Other than that, I would recommend this book.
An easy read with good characters and enough suspense to keep you interested. A good author.
Quite an enjoyable book with a good plot and cast of characters, all of whom are psychologically vulnerable . The interplay between the major players makes the book more interesting. It is the first in the series and I will definitely give him another shot, although he needs to change proofreaders as there are numerous grammatical errors. I …
Really like this author. Like his wit
So much about this battle I did not know.
Appreciated Gage ‘s struggle with entropy, not to mention his pit bull like commitment to his self-imposed mission.
First time I read this author, will get more of his books.
An excellent modern noir mystery with a hint of romance.
