From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Darynda Jones comes a new story in her Charley Davidson series… him, a mere mortal, in charge of protecting their gift to mankind. But when she disappears as well, he needs the help of another breed of hellion. One who can see past the veil of space and time. One who betrayed him.
She will get a truce in the deal, but she will never earn his forgiveness.
Marika Dubois’s son—a warrior in the coming war between heaven and hell—was foreseen long before his birth. But to create a child strong enough to endure the trials that lay ahead, she needed a descendant of powerful magics. She found that in Garrett Swopes and tricked him into fathering her son. A ploy he has never forgiven her for. But when he knocks on her door asking for her help, she sees the fierce attraction he tries to deny rise within him.
And Marika has to decide if she dares risk her heart a second time to help the only man she’s ever loved.
Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.

Everything I wanted and more!! There’s a whole lot of awesome packed into this novella. And that ending?! I want Beep’s series yesterday 🙂
I don’t read many novellas, usually only the ones that an author sends me. And I think this is only the second novella that I’ve purchased. But it’s from the Charley Davidson universe, so I had to because this series by Darynda Jones is the only series that I would take the day off of work in order to read the latest book… so, of course, I had to read the novella!
It was enjoyable to catch up with Charley and friends, and for those who have never read the series… First off, what is wrong with you! 😉 and second, Jones writes in such a way that you get easily caught up if you are new to this universe.
There was still some of the sass that this series is known for and one of the reasons I love it so much. We get to see what is happening with Beep and Ash, and a smidge with Charley and Reyes, which is wonderful. But most of the book focuses on Swopes and Marika.
I’ve always enjoyed Swopes, but usually he was interacting with Charley and that was always fun because Swopes is so straight-laced and Charley is more of an off the cuff type of gal. With Swopes and Marika it was just a lot of tension because of past decisions on both of their parts. The tension and sexual tension was written well, but after a bit the anger was a bit off putting for me. I was happy by the end of the novella because things are resolved in such a way that future interactions with them will be different.
As for the rest of the novella, Jones once again shows her fantastic imagination when it comes to other worlds, monsters, Hellhounds, and more. I enjoyed the descriptions and am happy more members of the team can see into the other world and that some of their powers are becoming stronger… because they are going to need it for the battles ahead.
I’m already looking forward to next year when we’ll get a novella to catch up with Amber and Quentin in 1001 Dark Nights: The Gravedigger’s Son.
A good addition to Charley Davidson series. Bafflingly thin on romance, considering the book description and the anthology it’s published in, but there were other things going on that impact the over-all plot of the series. Mainly about Beep, but also about Garrett, with a surprise twist at the end about Charley and Rey, making it a book no one who loves the series should miss.
A visit to universe of Charley Davidson always is exciting and this story certainly contains thrilling revelations about those nearest and dearest to Charley with even a surprise visit from…oops, that would be a spoiler….
I am so unbelievably happy to be back in the world of Charley Davidson. I’ve been a huge fan of the series since book 1. Between the wonderful stories, characters, and world building, the author delivers dry humor, sarcasm, and wit that never ends. Darynda Jones wrote another hit with The Graveyard Shift.
Garrett Swopes has been a favorite character in the series and it’s nice to have a story about him. Well, featuring him, but about Beep. He’s supposed to be Beep’s guardian but when she disappears in the blink of an eye, and Garrett has no abilities, he calls in the big guns – his ex, Marika. Her abilities to see through the veil will come in handy in trying to locate Beep.
The Graveyard Shift is a wonderful addition to the Charley Davidson series. The book is fun, fast-paced, and engaging. We get to revisit old friends and it feels like we never left.
Great to catch up with Swopes, Beep, Uncle Bob, and even Charley and Reyes make an appearance. Thank you, Darynda, for giving us a resolution after the 13th book. This novella is still a bit of a cliffhanger, leaving you wanting more.
The Graveyard Shift by Darynda Jones
A Charley Davidson Novella
This story takes place 5 years after the end of the main series. Beep, aka Elwyn, is five and precocious. When she suddenly disappears, Garrett, Marika and regulars from the series search.
Fantasy paranormal romance.
It’s a dream being able to re-enter this world. So great remembering all the characters. Most importantly, it does advance the series. We know that eventually Beep and her army will have to battle Satan. This novella advances us closer to that inevitable war.
I’ve already preordered the next 1001 Dark Nights series novella, The Gravedigger’s Son which is scheduled to be released May 2021. (singing) Anticipation….is making me wait.
Particularly the ending, why? well you’ll have to read it to find out.
If this is the first venture into Charlie’s world and the graveyard series I would seriously recommend you putting this one down and head on over to the “First grave on the right”. Don’t get me wrong you don’t have to but it’ll be a bit like walking into a conversation halfway towards the end. If you’ve read the other 13 other fabulous book and want to know if you should spend the pennies to purchase this one, my answer is a resounding yes, you’re going to looooove it, even the ending well actually particularly the ending 😀
Lordy, lordy!! I love Charlie Davidson series so hard and this novella on Garrett Swopes (swoon) and gang gave me just a little fix, I still want more from this fantastic series with Beep getting older and Osh making an appearance, I really need more..lol!!
This is my first story in this fascinating world and what an introduction. It’s fantastic! Gods, demons, angels, humans and otherworldly creatures in a story that captured by imagination with the thrilling search for the lost girl and my heart with the sexy romance between two humans. Garrett is a spectacular hero with his buff body and handsome face and interesting bloodline. And he’s met his match in the beautiful and beguiling Marika. So she used him to give her son every advantage in his fight to save the world. They issues are put aside in a hunt for the missing girl. Elwyn aka Beep is too important to lose and all the troops are called in for the search. An rowdy group of otherworldly bikers along with the witchy powers of Marika and Garrett. It’s a fast-paced adventure as Beep reappears from another dimension with a few new creatures in tow and the group has to fight to live another day. I loved the fantasy world along with the sexy romance between Garrett and Marika. A super hot couple. Who needs supernaturals when the extra-humans are this great? I loved the Voodoo elements of Garrett and Marika and their son, Zaire. Full of fun, quips and banter along with the dangerous creatures out to get Beep. A little mystery at the end for Garrett. How will his fight with Hayal affect his future? A terrific fantasy story and intro to the world of Beep’s mother, Charley Davidson. Loved it! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
The Graveyard Shift is part of the ‘Charley Davidson Series’. I haven’t yet read that series but I was able to read this as a standalone book. I did enjoy it a lot and want to go back and read the previous books. Garret is in need of help for the child who is called Beep, that has been put in his care. Beep is half human / half god but now has gone missing. This leads him to ask for help from Marika Dubois who is the mother of his son. Although he is in his son’s life he hasn’t forgiven Marika for being tricked into that fatherhood but we learn that Marika was doing it for the greater good of man. This was a really good read.
The daughter of the grim reaper and the son of Satan is growing up surrounded by people who love her and live to protect her. And what can go wrong when you are raising and protecting the daughter of two gods? Turns out a lot can happen.
I liked the way the adults in her life love and protect her, taking into consideration the special needs of a child who needs a childhood but is also so smart and advanced intellectually. It was just a lot of fun reading this novella.
Charley Davidson fans rejoice! Another great story from the realm of Darynda Jones’ mind. I loved this short but action packed great adventure. I really can’t wait for the next one to come out.
Wow. Just wow! This did not turn out the way I thought.. it was so much more than I expected and I loved it!
My love for this series is out of bounds and I’m so fucking excited that I get to go back into this world, albeit in a short while, through a novella. The Graveyard Shift features our favorite secondary characters, Garrett and Marika with the rest of the gang. The story started after the event that has happened in the last book of the series. This is a fast paced, action packed with lots of humor that we have come to know and love. Of course, I wish this was a full length novel because there is no way I’m not salivating to read more of Beep, Osh, Zaire and the epic battle that they will face. Overall, I loved it and cannot wait for more from this series!!!
THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT is the 13.5 instalment, and latest entry into the 1001 Dark Nights world, in Darynda Jones’ contemporary, adult CHARLEY DAVIDSON urban fantasy series focusing on part time private investigator, full-time grim reaper, and omnipotent god Charley Davidson. THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT changes the focus of the series to Charley and Reyes’ daughter- five year old, Elwyn Alexandra Loehr aka Beep.
Told from third person perspective (Garrett Swopes) THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT follows Garrett in the aftermath of Elwyn’s disappearance. Garrett had been assigned as protector of Charley and Reyes’ infant daughter but as Elwyn grew so too, did her supernatural powers, powers that were surpassing those of her mother and father’s. In an effort to locate said missing child, Garrett needs help from the woman who fathered his son, a woman with connections and powers in the world of Voodoo and magic. Enter Marika Dubois. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Marika and Garrett, as Garrett calls in the gang to help find a child-a god, actually- who is more than capable of looking after herself.
THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT is a welcome return to the world of Charley Davidson, and all of the characters we have come to know and love: Cookie and Uncle Bob, Angel, Donovan and the boys, Artemis, and the Hellhounds, and even a quick glimpse at the demon who has promised his love to an infant child. We are introduced to Marika Dubois and her son Zaire, both of whom are going to figure prominently in Elwyn’s life. THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT is a fast paced, astonishing and delightful story, one I am going to guess is the prequel to Beep’s series, and all of the gods and monsters who are aiming to take her down.
Excuse me while I squeal in delight in getting to return to this world of the Charley Davidson series! What a treat for the fans! Thank you Darynda Jones for Garrett Swopes’ story and of course leaving us begging for more!
When Garrett is put in charge of protecting the girl destined to save the world one day, the pressure is on. Especially being just a regular human being and her a half-human, half-god.
When she disappears one night, he has to go the one person he wishes he didn’t have to, his ex Marika (and mother of his 5 year old son). With Marika’s special abilities, he’s hoping she can help him find her. He’ll have to try and put aside all of the hurt and anger he feels towards his ex. But seeing her also brings up all the other feelings he still has for her. And he’s not alone in those feelings…
With the help from some of their friends, they will stop at nothing to find their special girl and take on whatever comes at them in the process.
I absolutely loved getting to go back into this series! I need more!!
I HAVE JUST READ THE BEST, MOST ENTERTAINING AND OH SO FANTASTIC NOVELLA FEATURING MANY OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SERIES, THE CHARLEY DAVIDSON SERIES! The Graveyard Shift is a novella featuring our favorite skip tracer and oh mama, it was wicked fun, exhilarating with non-stop action, heat and felt just like coming home from being away a VERY long time…comforting and made me feel well loved and taken car of.
Darynda Jones is one of the most talented authors out there. Her stories and stupendous characters grab a reader through the pages of her books and keeps a hold of them until the very end where they feel like they just got off the best ride of their life and makes them want to run back and take another ride. It felt SO GOOD to see Beep and Garrett and the gang. This was one amazing novella that I HIGHLY recommend for all those Charley Davidson fans out there. Trust me, you DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS!
The Graveyard Shift gets a MILLION AND ONE BRIGHT SHOOTING STARS!!
**ARC provided in exchange for an honest review**
There is absolutely no way for me to explain my love for the Charley Davidson series. I discovered this series back in 2012 and fell in love with the characters. Last year the author concluded the series with the 13th book, which was a very bittersweet moment for me. Spending seven years with a group of characters, you just can’t help but feel a bond with them. They become more than just fictional characters, you start to care for them. So when I saw that Darynda Jones was writing a novella, I just couldn’t contain my excitement. It was absolutely amazing catching up with all my favorite characters. I loved that this novella focused on Garrett and his relationship with the mother of his child, Marika. There is some strong tension between the two because she tricked him into getting her pregnant. He hasn’t been able to trust her (which I can’t blame him), but they will finally have to deal with their feelings when their lives are in danger.
I am usually not a big fan of novellas, but the author did an incredible job in telling a whole story. Would I have loved for it to be longer? Of course, I wouldn’t want it to end. Fans of this series, you are in for some big surprises. I seriously can’t wait for you to read this novella. My mind is blown, and I need Beep’s spin-off to happen ASAP. I hope that readers who haven’t heard of this series will get a taste and fall in love with the world Darynda has created. The Charley Davidson series is hilarious, sexy, action-packed and so emotional at times. It will have you laughing one moment and crying the next. This is one of my all time favorite series and I hope it will become one of yours as well. You may ask was it really a five star read. And my answer is YES, especially if you have read the series and feel a strong bond with the characters. But I still think it is a great introduction to the series for readers who are new to it.
