The “marvelously funny” and much-loved humorist explores the perils of suburban living in this New York Times bestseller (Vogue). For years, the Bombecks have heard rumors of a magical land called Suburbia where the air is clean, the grass is trimmed, and children don’t risk getting mugged on their walk to school. After watching their friends flee the city for subdivided utopias like Bonaparte’s … subdivided utopias like Bonaparte’s Retreat and Mortgage Mañana, Erma and her family load up their belongings and cry, “Station wagons . . . ho!” But life on the suburban frontier is not as perfect as they had hoped. The trees are stunted, the house is cramped, and there’s no grass at all. But the Bombecks will make do, for they are suburbanites now—the last true pioneers! This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erma Bombeck including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

I’ve always loved Erma Bombeck. I remember when she had a syndicated humor column in the paper. Teenager me loved how she could render iambic pentameter so hilariously; she told how a pencil would fall “behind the stove and out of your life.”
Although dated, the charm still remains. You’ll enjoy that sense of humor. I recommend it.
a fun read
I thought it hilarious and Oh-so-true years ago when it was first published. Us oldsters still appreciate it because it is our memories. Newer generations probably not so much. Such as the telephone decisions and additional costs for each decision then still having to wait 60 days for installation.
What a great, fun read.
Funny
Classic view of the mid-century middle class life. It’s funny, but there are some interesting underlying currents.
Erma is always worth reading usually more than once.
Absolutely funniest book I ever read
Love her writing style. Down to earth honest reflections on daily life. She lets you look inside her life and gives you a new view & hope for your own. Especially since we can all relate. Lots of laughter causing tears & sore belly. Which we all could use
Erma Bombeck never disappoints. Her unique way of looking at the events of everyday life always leave me with a chuckle and then makes me thankful that she wrote about them so that I can avoid the many issues that she and her family run into.
It is a shame that there will be no new books from her, so be sure to read and treasure the ones she has …
Erma has a gift for getting right to the heart of a situation.
Erma Bombeck was a master at bringing laughter into almost any situation!
I read this book years ago, and laughed through it all. Era Bombeck was a great comedy writer, but what she wrote about in this book was autobiographical. As a young mother, I could relate.
I would recommend this book still today!
Hiliarous….loved it
The world lost a great talent when Erma Bombeck passed away far too young. The woman was a comic genius with a fabulous delivery. She was an ordinary woman with the knack of looking at the world in a totally unique way. If you are a parent, you will especially love this book. Great point of view and truly funny. This is a book in my library …
Another funny, light read by Erma Bombeck. For a book that was published before I was born, it felt surprisingly relevant. I guess not much about being a homeowner has changed, other than the technology. My favorite part was the guy who coached the baseball team and his thoughts on losing.
Fun read
I love all her books.
Dated
Erma always keeps me laughing. She sees the world through wonderful glasses!
