The “marvelously funny” and much-loved humorist explores the perils of suburban living in this New York Times bestseller (Vogue). For years, the Bombecks have heard rumors of a magical land called Suburbia where the air is clean, the grass is trimmed, and children don’t risk getting mugged on their walk to school. After watching their friends flee the city for subdivided utopias like Bonaparte’s … subdivided utopias like Bonaparte’s Retreat and Mortgage Mañana, Erma and her family load up their belongings and cry, “Station wagons . . . ho!” But life on the suburban frontier is not as perfect as they had hoped. The trees are stunted, the house is cramped, and there’s no grass at all. But the Bombecks will make do, for they are suburbanites now—the last true pioneers! This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erma Bombeck including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

My mom used to read Erma Bombeck, so when I saw this book and others by this writer I had to pick it up. The number one reason for me to buy it- it reminded me of my mom. 2, I always laugh when I read it. 3, it is often very true about the adventures of being an adult. 4, It makes me laugh and reminds me of my mom…. I know I repeated myself- …
Fun to go back in time and see the big move from city to urban tract owners back in the day, the ups and downs of this movement and the bigger picture of what this movement led the populations, inventions, transportation, etc.
I was there as a child, but never really saw the big picture as is is written here. Enjoyable and funny.
I’ve always loved Erma Bombeck but this book is kind of all over the place or maybe I’ve outgrown her brand of humor over the years.
A belly laugh every page.
Loved this book because it made me laugh out loud.
I can see why housewives from the 70’s would find this funny. It was just a bit too dated for me.
Very funny at first, but got a little too goofy to be enjoyable later in the book.
It took me back to my own life in early marriage and motherhood.
. Great with and insight into human nature.
This was very funny. Want a laugh, go for it. I have always have been happy reading Erma.
A nice read, fun and a bit of memory/ history. Take the post war experience and has real fun with it. A story of the 50s suburbs and a great easy read.
I loved Erma Bombeck back in the day. I read this shortly after or was published. Now it feels very dated.
Dated and for older folks who can remember the suburbs. Still funny even if you don’t remember those days. Entertaining author
Great read for older people who actually remember and can relate to this book! Laughed all the way through.
I grew up reading her in the newspaper. It was a delight
I absolutely adore Erma Bombeck! My mother and I loved to read her books!
I needed something light and airy to read after all the political hoopla during the last few weeks – and Erma did not disappoint! I used to read her column in the AZ newspaper everyday and felt a real connection with her witty observations. She’s a gem…
Erma always had a unique view of life.
Bombeck never disappoints! Funny, direct and timeless commentary.
I love Erma’s sense of humor.
Read this book many years ago. Remember laughing out loud!
