The Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression, a book that galvanized—and sometimes outraged—millions of readers.First published in 1939, Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads—driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of … promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. At once a naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s powerful landmark novel is perhaps the most American of American Classics.
This Centennial edition, specially designed to commemorate one hundred years of Steinbeck, features french flaps and deckle-edged pages.

Although long, it is a classic in historical fiction.
A great classic. Should still be read for understanding of The Great Depression. A masterpiece.
Grapes of Wrath was beautifully written and describes an era when times were tough and impoverished people had no one to turn to for help. It is one of my all time favorie novels.
Did not like the language.
One of the most inspiring books I’ve ever read. Following one family from their dust-bowl poverty to supposed new life in California, this is one of the great works of literature.
One of the best books I have ever read.
Possibly the greatest American novel.
My favorite book
It has all been said before. Teaching this book to high school students was one of the most edifying experiences I have ever had.
Thought provoking
Greatest novel of the 20th century.
A classic.
One of my favorite books of all time
Historical fiction. The tragic tale of a family fleeing the Dust Bowl during the 1930’s Depression. Not an entertaining read, but well worth one’s while. To state the obvious: a classic.
His best
As good as any book gets….
I did not enjoy reading this, but understand its significance both in the past and in a world that continues to diminish the worth of people.
It has been a very long time since I read this book, but it’s one that you don’t forget. It’s justifiably a classic. The characters are unforgettable and very realistic. The story is tragic and concerns a dark episode in our nation’s history.
This is the story of my parents. I am second generation Okey. My Mom and Dad were dustbowl evacuees during this time in US hisory. They were fruit-tramps. I was born in Sacramento in 1945 in a hospital hallway according to Mom. Mom had an 8th grade education and Pop went to about the 5th grade.
This book allows you to feel this time in your stomach. It’s a must read.
After you read “The Grapes of Wrath” you can’t help but compare every book you read to it!
