The Grandpa Killer is the first book by Dan Pertosini that I have read. It is #10 in his Frank Luca detective series. In the story, there seems to be an inordinate number of deaths occurring in a retirement home. While on the surface, everything seems reasonable, one concerned relative thinks there is something sinister going on and demands the police investigate. The case falls into the lap of a homicide detective named Frank Luca.
The author did a great job conveying what it must be like to be a police officer working on a problematic homicide case while dealing with unique challenges at home. Luca has an exciting job hunting down killers, an amazing wife, and a daughter, of which he is very proud. But, when his wife receives some bad news, Luca has to balance his family issues and an increasingly intriguing conspiracy theory that leads Luca down a twisting, murderous rabbit hole. And it is a theory that is viable enough to make readers think.
I found the plot to be well-developed and the characters interesting. I also found the book stands very well on its own, which is great since I have read none of the previous books in the series. Some interesting twists and turns will keep readers guessing, and the ending is very satisfying. The Grandpa Killer is a compelling mystery story that readers will enjoy—definitely recommended.
4.25 Stars. This author isn’t afraid to tackle social issues. This times he takes on senior abuse and euthanasia. Luca is knee deep in a art burglary case, when he discovers two murders have taken place at a senior retirement resort. He is trying his best to juggle work and home. That balancing act has become more difficult, as Mary Ann and Jessica need him more than ever. Luca receives support from his colleagues and sound advice from Dr. Bilotti. He also remembers the words of wisdom from his father as he faces more serious challenges. You would think after battling cancer, he would get a pass.
The suspect pool is smaller than seen in previous books. The reveal is unexpected, which is something Petrosini is known for and pulls off with such ease.
Homicide Detective Frank Luca is on the trail of a callous serial killer in The Grandpa Killer, by Daniel Petrosini, book 10 in his outstanding A Luca Mystery series.
When a number of senior citizens in a retirement home meet their Maker rather sooner than anticipated, one of the angry relatives who think there’s foul play afoot, demand the police investigate.
At first there is nothing conclusive to prove a hastened end, but a deeper investigation opens new avenues and a conspiracy theory seems more likely to be fact than fiction, as the number of victims and suspects rises.
How can Luca get concrete proof to convince Captain Herrera and the team they’re on the right track?
Who is doing their best to thwart him? When is Luca most at risk during the case? Who is Vape?
What was the link between residents who paid up front, in order to get a cheaper monthly fee and those who went onto Medicaid?
A shockingly realistic story that reveals the depths of iniquity the love of money will make a man (or woman) sink to, The Grandpa Killer will haunt you for a long tome to come, as it’s so horribly possible.
