Sophy sets everything right for her desperate family in one of Georgette Heyer’s most popular Regency romances.
When Lady Ombersley agrees to take in her young niece, no one expects Sophy, who sweeps in and immediately takes the ton by storm. Sophy discovers that her aunt’s family is in desperate need of her talent for setting everything right: Ceclia is in love with … setting everything right: Ceclia is in love with a poet, Charles has tyrannical tendencies that are being aggravated by his grim fiancee, her uncle is of no use at all, and the younger children are in desperate need of some fun and freedom. By the time she’s done, Sophy has commandeered Charles’s horses, his household, and finally, his heart.

What a marvelous book! Although the author passed away in 1974, she wrote many historical fiction novels. The Grand Sophy was written in 1950 and I fell in love with the main character. To say she was larger than life is an understatement. I couldn’t put it down. It was so much fun to read! I also read These Old Shades by this author and found …
I discovered Georgette Heyer far later in life than I would have liked–how did I miss her books??–but having found her, I continue to explore her books and love every single one, but this one, The Grand Sophy, deserves a special place on every reader’s shelf. This book is a delight and sheer fun, as Sophy arrives at her aunt and uncle’s house …
The perfect escape. I fell in love with Sophy right away!
This is such a fun book! The eponymous Sophy is a fabulous heroine, spirited and confident and outrageous. She and the stern, repressive Charles strike sparks whenever they’re on the page together. Complications and adventures (and misadventures) abound, there’s a brilliant courtship that’s very definitely not a courtship, and a host of wonderful …
Heyer has always been one of my favorite authors and this is probably my favorite of all her books. Never a dull moment as Sophy returns to England and sets out to solve all the problems her family didn’t even realize they had. LOL funny. The final scenes are classic Heyer and you’ll want to re-read them just to make sure you didn’t miss anything.
I found myself smiling during this book. Loved it!
5 thousand stars
After listening to this book I feel like I have to go back and downgrade all my reviews of all other books.
It has just acquired the #1 position together with my beloved Pride and Prejudice.
Sophy is the perfect heroine. Strong, witty, extremely intelligent, a little crazy and so very very …
I loved this story. Sophy is a delightful character, kind of mix of Mary Poppins and Elizabeth Bennett.
Georgette Heyer writes with a light hand. Her dialogue is snappy and her characters are witty. A wonderful afternoon read when you want to escape into Regency England.
One of my favorite Heyers. Being 6ft tall and bossy myself, I love Sophy! Great characters. A hero who thinks he loves a total bore until he meets Sophy. But how to get out of the betrothal? Sophy fixes it, of course.
This delightful romance is set during Regency times and stars the indomitable Miss Sophia Stanton-Lacy, a young lady of 20 summers who arrives at the home of her uncle and aunt and promptly turns the entire place upside down. Her uncle is a cheerful wastrel, her aunt overwhelmed by life, her eldest cousin Charles irritable but good hearted, and …
Georgette Heyer’s “swoop down and make others’ lives better” heroine is unique. You have to love Sophy who just keeps doing what she thinks is best for everyone. A very satisfying tale by the mistress of romance.
I hate hate hate romance novels, but this one is an exception. So if you’re like me and don’t dig the romance but want to break out of your comfort zone, give this one a shot. The characters and unique, clever, and funny, and I had a great time reading it.
Oh! I have no words to describe what a terrifically charming character Sophy was! Not only was she frightfully clever in situations, but her witty banter and ability to charm made me laugh many times throughout the novel.
Mr Rivenhall on the other hand exasperated me to no end. How could he not see the real character of the despicable and …
Georgette Heyer is one of my favorite authors. I never tire of her stories. The Grand Sophie is another classic with well drawn characters, witty dialogue and great fun.
My daughter’s favorite Heyer story. Even have Audible…. Richard Armitage’s voice is great in Sylvester my daughter’s second fav.
It’s many, many years since I read a Georgette Heyer romance. I devoured them all as a teenager and wondered if the effect would be the same. It was. Now I need to reread them all.
There has been talk of The Grand Sophy being filmed… read it now before it appears. Never has there been a heroine like Sophy. She is a diplomat’s daughter who has lived in Europe at the time of the Peninsular War and has run her father’s houses there. She has faced danger, and thus she oozes a kind of confidence that is lacking in many woman …
I enjoyed reading this regency era story. Heyer creates a strong female heroine that defies the social norms of high society England. Sophy’s antics made me laugh and with each page I never knew what was going to happen next!
If you’ve never read a Regency romance by the late Georgette Heyer, what are you waiting for? This is one of my faves of hers.
I love Sophy, a woman who charts her course and is never daunted. It’s easy to see why she’s called THE GRAND SOPHY. She never thinks small. And you have to love a heroine who arrives with a monkey as a gift to the …
