The start of a new series from New York Times bestselling author Courtney Milan…
She will not give up.
Three months ago, governess Serena Barton was let go from her position. Unable to find new work, she’s demanding compensation from the man who got her sacked: a petty, selfish, swinish duke. But it’s not the duke she fears. It’s his merciless man of business–the man known as the Wolf of … business–the man known as the Wolf of Clermont. The formidable former pugilist has a black reputation for handling all the duke’s dirty business, and when the duke turns her case over to him, she doesn’t stand a chance. But she can’t stop trying — not with her entire future at stake.
He cannot give in.
Hugo Marshall is a man of ruthless ambition — a characteristic that has served him well, elevating the coal miner’s son to the right hand man of a duke. When his employer orders him to get rid of the pestering governess by fair means or foul, it’s just another day at the office. Unfortunately, fair means don’t work on Serena, and as he comes to know her, he discovers that he can’t bear to use foul ones. But everything he has worked for depends upon seeing her gone. He’ll have to choose between the life that he needs, and the woman he is coming to love…
The Governess Affair is a prequel novella (about 33,000 words) to the Brothers Sinister series. It is followed by The Duchess War, which is now available.

This is my first book by Courtney Milan, but it won’t be the last.
The story of Hugo Marshall, the notorious “Wolf of Clermont”, and Miss Serena Barton, is a perfect little gem. Serena is a victim, but despite her agoraphobic sister Freddy’s fear of everything, including living, and her pleas to Serena to let things lie, Miss Barton refuses to …
A strong, determined woman who refuses to back down from her mission meets the ruthless, equally-determined man whose employer has told him to destroy her. What could go wrong? This was the first Courtney Milan book I read, and it turned me into a firm fan!
Not a typical plot for historical romance. I was not expecting things to go the way they went…still was enjoyable.
A very good read with great characters and good story line.
This was my first book by Courtney Milan. I’ve heard many good things about her writing for years but just never got around to reading one of the two eBooks I had of hers on my Kindle. I was in the mood for something historical, and after seeing another raving review for Ms. Milan’s books, I decided to start with this prequel novella.
I had …
I liked this book. Serena had my sympathy from page one. The lives of women ment nothing in England during this time period. Her fear of Hugo was justified. I never could have guessed the outcome. this book proves that people can change when love is entered into the equation. I am reading the next book in this series ,also a great read.Enjoy! …
Would like to read more from this author
I’m only just getting into historical fiction but I’ve been a fan of Milan on twitter for ages. I’m so glad I downloaded this book. It’s not at all what I expected and I found it thoroughly enjoyable. I can’t think of another historical where the Hero married a woman pregnant with another mans baby! I don’t think that’s giving any spoilers away. …
I wish I would have read the sequel first, but I enjoyed it all the same! I had not read Milan before, but I certainly will again.
Stubborn wronged woman versus determined ruthless man – this was a contest of the sexes worth witnessing. Mind you, Hugo did operate under a handicap. After all, how often would a man like him even meet a woman like her in the Regency era? Now that I’ve been introduced to these characters, I really need to see what happens in Book 1.
Enjoyable novella. I’m looking forward to reading more of the series.
I’m giving this a 4 1/2 star rating, so I’ve rounded it up to 5 stars.
I want to congratulate Courtney Milan on being the very first historical romance that I have read. Historical romance is one of those genres that I just never really got into. I’m not a huge history buff and honestly, I always kind of avoided them. When the #CopyPasteCris …
this book and author went on of my top 3 authors and book to recommend to anyone

She was a governess used by a Duke and left without a job. He was the dukes right hand man. He thought it was an employment dispute, but what really happened shocked him. He does right by her and puts the Duke in his place.
This is a pre-quel into the Brothers Sinister series. The story is of Serena Barton who was hired as a governess for the Duke of Clermont and then raped by him. She became pregnant from the incident and eventually was fired by the Duke. She starts to camp out in front of the Duke’s residence where he enlists the help of his right hand man, Hugo …
OMG, I really hope Hugo and Serena are in the rest of the series because I absolutely adored them. Their tension is off the charts.
Although there is only one sex scene, it is SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD and well worth the wait.
Great writing, great characters.
I enjoyed the humor in the right places. It was a quick read, and I enjoyed it.
I love all of the books in Milan’s Brothers Sinister series, and this is the one that hooked me. It’s protagonists are broken yet likable, and their rapport is both clever and charming without any hint of melodrama or faux angst. The plot took a few unexpected turns to reach its satisfying conclusion. Milan is a brilliant writer (and thinker). Her …
Always a great writer.
