Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, spends the first years of her life under her aunt’s guidance learning to communicate with animals. As she grows up Ani develops the skills of animal speech, but is never comfortable speaking with people, so when her silver-tongued lady-in-waiting leads a mutiny during Ani’s journey to be married in a foreign land, Ani is helpless and … and cannot persuade anyone to assist her. Becoming a goose girl for the king, Ani eventually uses her own special, nearly magical powers to find her way to her true destiny. Shannon Hale has woven an incredible, original and magical tale of a girl who must find her own unusual talents before she can become queen of the people she has made her own. Look out for the other books in this series: Enna Burning, River Secrets, and Forest Born!

@lahsaiez and I were talking about fairy tale retellings, and I think my favorite retelling EVER would have to be Shannon Hale’s The Goose Girl. Beautifully rendered, the book gives the female protagonist much more independence and develops the politics nicely. If you love retellings, bookmark this one!
This has always been one of my all-time favorite books. It has beautiful writing and is a really fun retelling of a fairy tale. I’ve reread it so many times, and it never gets boring.

Buddy read with Raquel Evans
This was a very good book. I enjoyed it very much. The narration was amazing [it was a full cast recording along with a main narrator and that really added to the story] and I really liked that part of the story as well.
What I was not crazy about this was just how violent it was – it was very …
This quaint story was a refreshing find among the edgier novels flanking it on the shelf. Based off of the Grimm fairy tale of the same name, The Goose Girl is the story of young Ani, Crown Princess of Kildenree. An unusual trait for a book’s main character, Ani is not a good communicator and has trouble articulating herself. Her eccentric aunt …
Just finished re-reading this fantastic book. I loved it just as much as I did when I first read it over a decade ago. Probably more, actually, because I was able to love not only the characters and plot but also the almost poetic language in which Shannon Hale writes. It is SO INCREDIBLE. Off to re-read Enna Burning now… Except not really …
I enjoyed listening to this book. I enjoyed the full cast performance and different voices. Loved the animals and how they are portrayed. As animal owners know, they all have their own personality. I felt there was this action throughout the story to keep young and old interested. I know this story is meant for middle grade. Knowing that I am no …
So I am rereading some old favorites to make sure they are third grader appropriate, and this was one of my favorite fairy tale retellings. I love the goose girl story, but its just creepy enough that I wondering if I should maybe hang off another year before I put this one in 8 year old hands. But I read Goosebumps in third grade, so I don’t …
This book made me want to be a writer. I loved how original the premise felt and couldn’t put it down! I even read it behind the cash register at the bookstore I worked at. Gorgeous words, intriguing characters, and a beautiful story.
This is one of my favorite books! It’s written for teens, but I read it as an adult. I loved the MC and her unique gifts. There was quite a bit of plot suspense that kept the pages turning. Watching how she used these gifts to both protect and comfort herself, it was very unique! I fell in love with her man 😉 and their HEA was so sweet. Now that …
It seemed to take forever for me to get this novel read, but that’s no fault of the book; I was just busy. It does have a fairly leisurely pace ‘round about the middle as Ani learns and grows as a person and develops her fascinating animal- and wind-speak, which was fine with me. I guessed the romantic twist, but enjoyed reading how it panned out …
Loved it! Best sick day book ever 🙂
I like it it’s more yum to my brain
