Six months have passed since the first murder investigation Detective Reed Mattox and his K-9 partner worked together, finding them in the throes of a steamy Midwestern summer.Working in The Bottoms, a notorious neighborhood on the west side of Columbus, they expect the usual increase in low-level crime the hottest months tend to bring but nothing compared to this.A body is found, and then … this.
A body is found, and then another, and soon Reed and Billie are on the trail of a potential serial killer whose only pattern for his crimes seems to be no pattern at all.
Bodies begin piling up at an alarming rate. Battling against the heat and the clock, they must sort through the crimes to identify a common thread that ties them all together. If they can, they may be able to stop the murders.
If they can’t, there’s no telling how many more will become victims before the dog days of summer end…

i did not finish reading this one. Totally uninteresting.
Regardless the failures, whims, personalities or pecidillos of the all too fraile and human humans, life goes on and triumphs in the end. Great read with clever use of detail and imagery.
Dustin Stevens has done it a good. I always enjoy a good detective mystery but add in a K-9 you can be sure it just got better. I love the way the author actually uses Billie, the K-9 in the story. Detective Reed Mattox and his K-9 partner, Billie work out of a police station in Columbus, Ohio. They work the night shift in the Bottoms — the rough part of town. When bodies are found on a daily basis but there is no apparent connection Reed and Billie have their work cut out for them. This is a very unusual plot which will definitely keep you guessing.
This is the second book in the series about Reed, a detective for the Columbus Police Department and Billie, his K9 Detective partner. The story stands alone but book one does contain some good background info on each character and how they ended up together, working how they work.
This story is a unique one. A quick series of seemingly unrelated murders in a particular area of Columbus. If you enjoy the investigative part of books like this you’ll really enjoy The Good Son. The work Reed and Billie do to ultimately zero in on the connections, the motive and the suspect is great. The author does a great job of dropping clues so the reader can play along. I figured out the motivation pretty quickly thanks to them but there were a couple I kicked myself for missing.
Another unique aspect of the book is that I kind of felt a bit of sympathy for the killer. The author does some interesting character development for him too. He knows what he is doing is wrong. He feels awful about it but feels like he has no choice. And once again horrible parenting rears it’s ugly head!
The secondary characters, most of whom we met in book one, play significant roles in advancing the story arc which moves at a great pace.
I am really enjoying the detective and his four legged partner. This is a series I will definitely stay invested in.
I have read all of the Reed and Billie books….Loved them.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a great storyline &, of course, the best of all was the hero DOG!
This story has stayed with me for some time. The dilemma, drivers, and characters are original and well defined.
This book was about a man going to extremes to get his mother a liver transplant.
Well written. The premise was haunting, the characters well developed, and a totally different plot. The only thing that bothered me was the big jump from being totally stumped to solved based on a kind of flimsy clue. Can’t elaborate without spoiling the read for someone else. Nevertheless, it was a good read from cover to cover.
Great read
It was a good, fast moving easy read
An entertaining and fast-paced story with an intriguing plot of employing murder to manipulate the organ donation wait list. When Reed discovers that three of the victims were organ donors and that the fourth was a prospective organ recipient, the case comes into focus. With a taskforce behind them, Reed and his canine partner, Billie, find and capture the Good Son, who was killing people to enhance his mother’s probability of receiving a replacement organ. The interaction and coordination of Reed and Billie was presented particularly well.
Another good read from this author. I highly recommend.
A lot going on in this murder thriller. The search for the killer was difficult as there was no similarities at first. Then little things started adding up that let to the killer and why he was doing it.
Found it tragic and scary. It depicts the dark side of despair.
This story was good on so many levels. It is hard to know where to start with the praise. I enjoyed every page of the story. I would highly recommend reading this powerful story.
Not terrible but not great, predictable, was hoping for more.
A bit wordy but well written and good story.
The plot gives you nightmares!
The best hing about the book was the lack of stupid angst and characters whining about their personal probems. Reed and Billie are great characters, real person and companion officer.
