Pearl S. Buck’s timeless masterpiece, the Pulitzer Prize–winning story of a farmer’s journey through China in the 1920s
The Good Earth is Buck’s classic story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They are blessed with sons, and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property … they can afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? And can his material success, the bedrock of his life, guarantee anything about his soul?
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Award, The Good Earth was an Oprah’s Book Club choice in 2004. A readers’ favorite for generations, this powerful and beautifully written fable resonates with universal themes of hope and family unity.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

I read this in high school in the 70s. A classic then and now!
Book 1 of a trilogy, but you don’t have to read the others to enjoy this. I liked her succinct, short descriptions and writing style. This is an allegory about “wanting more” when you have everything you need.
This is truly a classic for a reason. Take the time to read it thoughtfully.
A must read classic.
This was one of the books for our book club. It wasn’t something I would have read on my own but I’m so glad I read it. Wonderful characters and a great story.
A real journey with the characters and a real real eye opener on how others live.
I read this book years ago in high school and still remember how much I loved it. I recommend this book to every American child in that it shows you the ways of another culture and it’s history. It would also help them appreciate the life they have. I only wish there were more stars to give.
I never knew this was part of a trilogy. Anxious to read the others. Character development was excellent.
First book I ever read. Made me love reading.
I read this book 60 years ago and it remains a favorite. Wonderful writer and, at that time, so informative of the Chinese people and attitudes.
Loved the story and the culture.
Classic. Packed with insightful information.
This is one of the greatest books ever written!
