Pearl S. Buck’s timeless masterpiece, the Pulitzer Prize–winning story of a farmer’s journey through China in the 1920s
The Good Earth is Buck’s classic story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They are blessed with sons, and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property … they can afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? And can his material success, the bedrock of his life, guarantee anything about his soul?
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Award, The Good Earth was an Oprah’s Book Club choice in 2004. A readers’ favorite for generations, this powerful and beautifully written fable resonates with universal themes of hope and family unity.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

Had read this book years ago. Re-reading it was just as pleasurable, enjoyable and fulfilling as before. Highly recommend this one and the other books Ms. Pearl wrote. She is a great story teller and makes the period of China come alive for me.
Interesting and different culture even though I had some trouble liking the main character.
I think it gives great insight into the society and culture of pre-war China.
I read this book as a teenager, and it opened up a culture and world to me. It might be useful to reread it all these years later.
It’s impossible to not be completely pulled into this book
Perhaps the beginning of my fascination with Asia.
I know it is a classic but I didn’t care for it. Too slow. I couldn’t relate to the characters.
One of Pearl Buck’s best. Growing up as a child of missionary parents enabled her to write about the people in an authentic way. Truly entertaining and well worth the read
The Good Earth is one of the great classics for a reason.
I loved this book. I read it as a kid and again when I was older. I enjoy reading about other cultures.
It is a little dated – somewhat old book, but a well written historical classic. I have read several other of her books…all good – if not a bit depressing at times.
JUST READ IT!!
This is an excellent book. Very well written and thoughtful. Great story too.
Loved it of course…it’s Pearl Buck!
This book is a classic I could read again because the author successfully transported me into a completely different world than my own and I was able to empathize with the characters despite cultural differences.
I read this book for the first time when I was an adolescent; it was in my father’s small library and he told me it was too old for me. It probably was, but it offered a haunting story of a foreign land and time that piqued my interest in both China and that time in its history, a fascination that I’ve continued to hold 50 years later. I don’t …
favorite author since I was a very young. Her books are wonderful. Deep insight into characters, A must for any budding anthropologist. She brings the period alive and makes you feel a part of it, Her characters are strong
What on earth could I add to this already multiable book by Pearl Buck, that has been published so many times, talked about, loved and Discussed? I’ve always loved this book, Pearl’s writing and understanding of her people…….please make up your own minds.
A book from my childhood. Magnificent Pearl Buck and her written reverence of a land and the people she loved.
I thoroughly enjoyed the novel for all of its aspects – the hope, successes, and tragedies endured by the characters. The author captures and lovingly preserves her interpretation the way of life in China during this period. I didn’t expect to enjoy the novel as much as I did, and I agree that it is a classic.
