Pearl S. Buck’s timeless masterpiece, the Pulitzer Prize–winning story of a farmer’s journey through China in the 1920s
The Good Earth is Buck’s classic story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They are blessed with sons, and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property … they can afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? And can his material success, the bedrock of his life, guarantee anything about his soul?
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Award, The Good Earth was an Oprah’s Book Club choice in 2004. A readers’ favorite for generations, this powerful and beautifully written fable resonates with universal themes of hope and family unity.

It has been too long since I read it to recall details. What I do remember is thoroughly enjoying it.
I liked the book but I dislike the ending. It seemed as if there was something missing. It left me waiting for closure.
This classic was the first Pearl S. Buck I ever read and it hooked me. It brought me into the world of Chinese culture in the past. The world where little girls painfully had their feet bound to keep them small enough to attract husbands.
After seeing her writing style, the depth of her characters and descriptive locations, as well as her multi …
I read this book a long time ago (40 years?) The characters were well developed. You lived in her skin. It haunts me to this day how she gave birth by herself in a field and then went back to work.
You really felt like you were right there with her. You were made to understand her world and her despair.
At the time, I had never read anything like …
One of my all time favorites!

Once I read one of Pearl Buck’s novels, I sought more and more. The Good Earth is an amazing novel. Stirs every emotion as you come to know each character .
Watched the movie on TCM and it honored author’s work.
Girls will enjoy reading this book before high school age. Not sure it weathers time well, but feels like an authentic look into Chinese peasant life prior to the Maoist era. Simple straightforward language is suitable to depicting the lives of rural agrarian Chinese family.
A classic. Always.
– classic but a bit slow developing for today’s eaters

I’ve read this book three times over my lifetime of 70 years, and I relate to different aspects as I move through the decades. The Good Earth is truly a classic that depicts life in rural China and the universal struggles faced by all of us.
A classic that I think should be read by everyone!
