Pearl S. Buck’s timeless masterpiece, the Pulitzer Prize–winning story of a farmer’s journey through China in the 1920s
The Good Earth is Buck’s classic story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They are blessed with sons, and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property … they can afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? And can his material success, the bedrock of his life, guarantee anything about his soul?
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Award, The Good Earth was an Oprah’s Book Club choice in 2004. A readers’ favorite for generations, this powerful and beautifully written fable resonates with universal themes of hope and family unity.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

Classic. Must read.
This was one of the first books I read as a young adult which impacted me.
Very good story.
I love this book, in fact, I’ve read it two or three times and will probably read it once more before I die. It brings China before communism, alive. There’s something to be said about peasant women. They may not have had much but they worked hard to keep what they had and they stood by their families. If you want to know more about China during …
quite simply, I found the characters, the setting and the writing ugly. I gave up, could not read it.
Very though provoking
Very heavy reading, but a true picture of the lives of the Chinese people during the 1930s. I prefer something a little lighter in nature.
I read this book in High School and liked it then. Should probably re read it now as a 60+ adult.
A wonderful book from a wonderful author.
This is my Favorite book, ever! I love Pearl S. Buck! I’ve read this at least 10 Times! I have the Trilogy and it’s a Beautiful book!!
A great book in every sense of the word Could not put it down
Required reading in college, but I’ll never forget it.
A bit along the lines of long winded fable but very readable. Somewhat predictable. Some interesting life lessons woven in as well.
Finally read after years and years of setting it aside for others but it is so recommended and often required in lit. classes. So I read it and was actually disappointed. I thought there be be more, I looked for it but at the point you are looking too hard, its not worth finding.
Read this in high school and I was hooked on Pearl Buck. I read everything she wrote and was responsible for turning me into an avid reader.
I recently read this book for the second time. I first read it in high school and remember that it was a great book, but I couldn’t remember much about the story. I still found the book compelling, with a lesson that is strong for today about the accumulation of wealth and how it can affect those who have the wealth and how those who have less …
one of my most memorable reads.
Read for a class assignment. Interesting and made me more aware of different parts of our world.
I read this book a long time ago and was pleased to find such a good deal. The story has so many valuable lessons for life. Multi-faceted.
The excellent writing of The Good Earth transports the reader to a very different culture and time period, which in itself is fascinating. Even more so, however, are the universal life lessons and truths that it illuminates. The reader grows fond of the characters, suffers and celebrates right along with them. Their happiness is measured, not …
