The Pulitzer Prize–winning classic novel of China, together with its two sequels—by the Nobel Prize winner. The Good Earth is Buck’s classic, Pulitzer Prize–winning story of Wang Lung, a Chinese peasant farmer, and his wife, O-lan, a former slave. With luck and hard work, the couple’s fortunes improve over the years: They have sons and save steadily until one day they can afford to buy property … afford to buy property in the House of Wang—the very house in which O-lan used to work. But success brings with it a new set of problems. Wang soon finds himself the target of jealousy, and as good harvests come and go, so does the social order. Will Wang’s family cherish the estate after he’s gone? The family’s story continues in Sons and A House Divided, when the Revolution sweeping through China further unsettles Wang Lung’s family in this rich and unforgettable portrait of a family and a country in the throes of widespread national change.

I read the Good Earth before but never knew it was a trilogy. I enjoyed it immensely.
Read all 3.
This book gives you insights into a Chinese culture of the past. Yet it’s relationships between father’s and sons, family obligations, and the pains of becoming an adult are timeless.
I liked this book because it took me to another world.
Buck transports readers to the pre-revolution China she experienced as the child of missionaries.
I could not put it down a great read now on book 2
Pearl Buck is an amazing story teller of the Chinese culture. Always learn some history while “watching” the characters grow
Read the first book years ago and loved it, couldn’t pass up the chance to reread it and the other books at such a good deal. Still loved The Good Earth, the next book was not quite as good and the last one was just too slow. Still worth the time and money, always enjoy this author.
Good insight in early development of a country that is a world power
I’m currently reading the second book The Son’s of this 3 book trilogy I have never read anything by Pearl S Buck so this was a first for me. I love how the story flows.
As a senior I can relate to the story in the sense we all have ambition when we are young and hope and plans for what our children might become. In this book we see that just …
The Good Earth was my first Pearl S Buck to read. Since that time I have read almost 20 of her books and love every one, but this trilogy is my favorite. It started me on a long reading journey of China.
Read these books before and enjoyed them even more this time.
I love the way Pearl Buck writes, making you feel the person, in this case a chinese person back in times past. She describes the simple pleasures of the earth and a simple life.
A must read! Don’t miss this amazing trilogy about a Chinese family… Oh, so surprising and interesting!
20th century classics everyone should read.
Very well written and captured the Chinese culture
Totally unforgettable , outstanding, a must read
I like everything that Pearl S Buck writes.
The trilogy gives an excellent view of Chinese life and culture many years ago. I first read these books as a young person, then re-read them in later years. Pearl S. Buck is a wonderful storyteller. I think I’ve read all of her books and none were more memorable than The Good Earth.
I loved these books as a teenager and have reread them since. Wonderful story set in China. Great reads.
