In The Golem and the Jinni, a chance meeting between mythical beings takes readers on a dazzling journey through cultures in turn-of-the-century New York.
Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life to by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic and dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899.
… York harbor in 1899.
Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert, trapped in an old copper flask, and released in New York City, though still not entirely free
Ahmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable, Helene Wecker’s debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale.

A very original story with very original characters…I highly recommend!
Completely unexpected premise, creatively examined.
Very well written and entertaining. Would recommend to anyone who had a good imagination.
The characters were really different. This made for very unpredictable occurrences throughout the tale. I had a hard time putting this book down, couldn’t wait to see how it would conclude.
This ended up becoming one of my favorite new reads. In fact, I’ve reccommended it to several of my fellow bibliophiles. The premise and characters take a new and intriguing turn. The setting in historical New York City is exceedingly well drawn. I truly am looking forward to the author’s future writings. Very well done, indeed.
This an easy read about complex characters. Traditions from the Old World were vivid and informative. I actually got emotional about the circumstances of the Golem then found some compassion for the Jinni — I like that I was involved in their intertwining tales.
I loved reading this! Great !
This historical fantasy is a wonderful book. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
This was an enjoyable read.
