“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

Loved the art education. Elegant prose.
This is definitely in my top five favorite book of all time
The writing was beautiful. The story was haunting but had me hanging on every word. Instantly became one of my favorite books.
I read this some time ago, and was completely captivated by it. I never knew what would happen next, and so it kept me engaged throughout.
Terrific book. Excellent writer. Author made me feel like I was there, seeing what characters saw, feeling what characters felt.
Too long and drawn out
Donna Tarrt has 3 books she’s written and all are excellent page turners. The Goldfinch I actually read twice. I haven’t seen the movie yet but definitely plan to. I highly recommend this book, all of hers.
Better than the movie
Loved this
It has been a while since I’ve read a novel that was nearly eight hundred pages in length. The Goldfinch, of course, won the Pulitzer, and that’s why I was initially drawn into tackling it. First off, I concur with a friend’s succinct assessment: There’s just too much of it. Ms Tartt has a penchant for flaunting her knowledge (or researched …
I started out really liking this and thought it got repetitive and dull. could have been a better book
Stellar book of the highest order. I love the characters, pacing, and language so much.
Completely disappointing after The Secret History. Rambling, way too long, mostly unsympathetic characters, not believable.
Great read. This book was recommended to me by a friend and did not disappoint.
A novel to get lost in. Brings a time and place vividly to life.
One of my favorite books. The author pulls you in to the life of the main character and it is beautifully done. I loved watching him change and grow, and liked equally well the other characters with whom he interacted. Although I read this several years ago, I still remember it vividly. Many books I read and enjoy are forgotten soon after. …
There is not a single sympathetic character in the entire book!
loved her previous works hated this one–nicely written work about nothing and characters I depised.
I enjoyed this book when I started reading but by the end, I was completely apathetic. The story began with an interesting plot and I was really sympathetic to the main character but as the story continued, I grew more impatient and I cared less and less; the story dragged on with little purpose and the main character was just worthless, despite …
Interesting plot. Well written. Her other books are great too
