“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

I loved this book! The characters are realistic. The plot is complicated and unexpected, but believable! I couldn’t wait to pick the book back up and find out what happened next!
very good novel. really enjoyed it.
One of the best books I have read.
“The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt is its own masterpiece, about a masterpiece—a small painting of a chained goldfinch by the Dutch artist Carel Fabritius. This 1654 painting hangs today in the Hague, the Netherlands. This fictional story revolves around this painting, taken from a NYC art museum by a 13-year-old boy named Theo after a terrorist bomb …
For me, this was nothing short of a masterpiece of fiction! No wonder it won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Rich, emotional, and profound are just a few descriptors that come to my mind.
THE GOLDFINCH is not just well-written, but beautifully-written. Don’t be put off by its length because you will fly through this page turning plot, with …
I finished The Goldfinch yesterday and cannot get it out of my head. This book reminds me of a “Life, Interrupted” story. Thirteen-year-old Theo Decker survives a bombing that kills his mother. Up until then he had lived a normal life with a loving mother, but then his life was derailed. This story is about so many things, love, loss, …
Yes, it’s quite an old book in our rapidly changing world, but it’s still worth a look. Especially I am hooked by the long reflections of the main character, flowing into each other and creating for this work an atmosphere of spiritual romance. I will certainly reread this book, sitting in the evening by the fireplace, covered with a blanket.
It took me on a journey and stayed with me long after I put the book down.
Excellently written. Loved the story.
This was a highly recommend book. There is much detail, which for me, is interesting. However, I found it a troubling read.
Enjoyed the book and looking forward to the movie.
I didn’t like this book at all. It did t go anywhere.
I have to confess I am still listening to this book but it is riveting. The characters are engaging and I continue on to find out what will happen next.
A fantastic read. Couldn’t put it down.
I can’t go to the Metropolitan Museum without thinking of this book. Really powerful and moving.
Nihilism reigns through the novel. It is difficult to get through at times but highly realistic representation of the impermanence of life. It left me depressed but I highly recommended reading the book to study the characters and the realities of life.
Thought provoking
Very intense; every incident piles threateningly upon another. Characters are believable but I kept waiting for the main character to chart a different course. Doesn’t happen but the book is startling and satisfying in equal measure.
I really ,really disliked this book. I can’t believe I read the whole book.
I liked the book, but it wasn’t interesting or memorable enough to warrant the prizes and attention it received. the book was long, the end disappointing, and the story was tedious at times.
