“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

Dickinsonian. Poor orphan boy alone in the world. Loved, loved, loved it.
Brilliant
Strange people in strange situations. Well planned & thought-out. The characters weren’t likable. It was actually quite sad. I see why it was a best-seller, but personally I prefer books which provide some goodness, happiness, fun…this didn’t.
It disappointed with the last quarter of this book!
This was a very unusual book. My book club reviewed it and I was probably the only one who said I enjoyed it to a degree. I thought it was very long and drawn out but I did enjoy quite a bit of it. Im glad I read it, but I am certain that it is not a book for everyone.
Interesting good writing.
I really enjoyed this book, the story line and characters where great. I just felt that it was 100 pages too long. It dragged in places. That said, I still enjoyed it enough to give it 5 stars. Very well written.
Very intriguing!
Wonderful story and very well written. A book you can get totally absorbed in
I don’t know what all the hype was about. Parts of this book were interesting, but it dragged on and on
What a tale! Loved it but would have loved it even more if it had been more tightly edited.
I thought this book would never end. The author got stuck & couldn’t figure out how to say: the end. I would not recommend. It’s boring.
One of the best books I’ve ever read!!
Not one of my favorites.
In my top ten all time.
This is such a well written book and I cannot praise it highly enough. I really think this book will appeal to just about everyone.
One of my favorite books of all time. I’ve read it twice and have listened to it three times. Love this book. We read it for book club and had one of our best, liveliest discussions.
A Pulitzer Prize winning novel I couldn’t put down. The characters haunted me long after I finished reading it.
A beautifully written and captivating story.
Anything Donna Tartt writes is worth reading!
