“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

You’ll feel like you lived this story rather than read it. It’s brilliantly written.
Hard to read and boring in spots.
One of my favorite ever. Love all Tart books.
I really enjoyed the brilliant writing of Donna Tartt in The Goldfinch, and engaged with the main character and the minor ones. The storyline was also interesting. However, I thought the book could have benefited from more editing…. it did go on a bit in places.
I really liked the first 150pages and the last 200 pages
I liked the character development and was intrigued with the story
Then it became boring , repetitive and very unsatisfying
The last part was also well written . It was just long
Spent way too much time describing the main characters drug use. Otherwise, would have been a very interesting book.
This is one of my favorite books of all time.
I don’t recommend it Way too long and depressing for sure
too long
I can’t say enough about this book. Everyone I’ve recommended it to has loved it, as well. A mystery with many layers and some sub plots, best characters, great writing, believable, such a unique premise. It has everything. I’m looking forward to the movie, and that’s unusual for me.
Loved it until the very end when it turned into an actual film.
The characters in this book were so unique, as was the storyline. Great read.
This book was about two thirds too long. Yes it was entertaining and yes the story was well crafted just way too long to get to the point.
Donna only writes one book every ten years..this one was well-worth waiting for…as were the previous two..
Thrilling , surprising beautifully written
Long but SO worth it. I found myself thinking about this book days after I had finished reading it.
Donna Tartt is one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints. Very original story. Loved it and it will be a movie soon!
Overated
I’m pretty sure that if I were allowed to visit Donna Tart’s house, I would find a lot of things in it. It must be huge with a lot of rooms. It probably is a bit messy from such an obsessive agglomeration that does not throw away anything because maybe once she’ll have to use it. In a drawer in the bedroom, she must have crumpled pages of …
Hated for it to end!
