“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

One of the best books I’ve read this year, couldn’t put it down
One of best books I’ve read in quite some time
As a 13-year-old who loses his mother in a terrorist attack while they were visiting a New York museum, I had sympathy galore and Tartt’s writing had me riveted. But, afterwards, I got a bit skeptical and perhaps, after reading some reviews of reviews of the book, I’m trying to find my way to whether I see this as a terrific opus or a book that …
Clearly the best novel to come out of this century so far. There is nothing I can say that Stephen King has not said in his brilliant review.
The writing is brilliant. The story is at times magical but totally real. One of the best books I have ever read. I hated when it ended
Yes, I recommend even though I ultimately didn’t love. I did adore the first one hundred pages but eventually it became tedious. At least three hundred pages too long.
not her best work
I can’t wait for the TV series but I urge you to read this first. Quite siply one of the best books of the past ten years.
Different, somewhat interesting but lagged toward the end.
A dark sad story.
Three sections which were bright together at the end.
Exceptionally well written and nice attention to detail. Not for the casual reader.
This was a gift from my daughter. An actual paperback novel, instead of the eBook which I normally prefer because then I’m not intimidated by the heft and I can read in the dark. If I had read it on the Kindle I would never have guess it was 771 pages. It just flows. Great characters and a travelogue of settings from NYC to Las Vegas to Amsterdam …
Horrible book. Author takes pages to cover something which could be covered in much less time. Will never read another book by this author. Don’t know why it got such good reviews!
One of my favorite novels of all time!
Beautifully written with memorable characters. Disaster, art, and love woven in a stream.
Very substantive literature. Beautifully written.
Great character development.
Although I despised The Secret History I loved The Goldfinch as it has a broad range of well-drawn characters and settings. Theo, Hobie and Pippa are such endearing, whimsical characters who drew this reader into the book; the Barbours, who show the same distaste for the privileged that Tartt shows for those in The Secret Friend, and Boris are …
