“The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind….Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.” — Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review
Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his … that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love—and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

I found this book very depressing. Although, I enjoyed Tart’s style of writing, very descriptive. The story was too sad for me to enjoy.
Riveting and brilliant. It’s one of my top 10 best reads!
Loved!!
I did not like this book.
Overated
I didn’t like it but I read it to the end because it was a Book Club book. I knew we would be discussing it and I wanted to be informed. I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like it…Both the characters and the plot! What did I like about the book?… Not Much!
I just did not “get” this book or understand why it got such good reviews! Would NOT recommend.
Unique book, some characters still live in my mind years after I read the book.
Loved it..
I LOVED this book. It’s now added to my Top Books of All Time list, which is not that long. Brilliant characters who are round and true and so very human that the reader really cares and wants to know what happens to them. The hook of the novel is a small painting (inconsequential to the unenlightened) that a boy saves from a horrible explosion …

Delicious in every way. A captivating tale with fantastic characters and a mesmerizing story. Hard to imagine a more enjoyable book.
Love Tartt’s lyrical prose, her characters, and the twists and turns of the plot. Kept me riveted the throughout the book.
This is an exceptional novel. It says so much, about love and loss and memory and friendship. I re-read it every couple of years. Donna Tartt is a genius.
This book had an interesting premise and beginning; however, it dragged on and on and could have been one third the length. It also had a very pessimistic feel. I couldn’t wait to finish it, and only did because it was for my book club.
Consistently the best book I’ve read in the last 10 years.
Didn’t like it
Beautifully written. Fascinating, intriguing story. Fully drawn characters. Emotionally involving.
fabulous book. Not a light read but well worth the journey!
I am one of the few people who hated this book. I was never invested in any of these characters.
