The modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an “All-Time Greatest Novel” and Newsweek hailed as a “Top 100 Book of All Time.” Philip Pullman takes readers to a world where humans have animal familiars and where parallel universes are within reach.Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they … take the children they steal–including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.
Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.
But what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help on of them will be to betray the other…
A masterwork of storytelling and suspense, Philip Pullman’s award-winning The Golden Compass is the first in the His Dark Materials series, which contintues with The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.

A young adult book, The Golden Compass has a host of unusual characters. Lots of action in this fantasy novel.
It’s been a few years since I listened (yes, I listened to a highly rated audio version) and I will be unpopular for saying this, but I HATED this book with a passion! – it made me feel terrible!
I won’t say it was badly written – I don’t remember the writing as bad. But I had NO sympathy for the main character, and I couldn’t stand her parents. …
It gave me the creeps. I couldn’t finish the first book.
It’s a little confusing but the whole series is great
Can’t believe I finished it. Awful
Very hard-to-read, but once you get to the second book it’s a lot easier to read, but it was worth the effort to sit down and finish it.
Story was ok . authors goal disappointing
Deeply enjoyed reading this book.
I really enjoyed this book and it’s sequels. The writing is fabulous and well thought out. The characters become your family. Once you get past the whole good is evil and evil is good thing, you can live in the worlds of the Golden Compass!
I love The Golden Compass I couldn’t put it down awesome read
This is the first in a trilogy that will stay with me. It’s difficult to say which of the three books was the best. They were all great. Being a ferret lover, I was happy also to see that our heroine’s ‘soul’ was always a weasel of some kind. These books do not take you where you think you are going to go. They are really deeply spiritual, …
This is a classic Adults-are-failing children’s novel and I think it’s perfect for anyone. I already bought a copy for my niece.
I loved Lyra’s curiosity & feistiness & found the concept of daemons intriguing.
Atheist book
A great start. Too bad the rest of the series kind of petered out. The Movie version is just a mess!
