Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts. MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, … is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.
The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.
The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

Really enjoyed this.
This is a memoir of the author’s dysfunctional family. Be warned that if you have a special tenderness for children then read this with care. I would read it for awhile and then had to put it away to read more later. With that being said, I was amazed how the children learned to feed ,clothe and care for themselves and protected each other. They …
As a novel this story might have seemed “over the top;” as a memoir, it was heart-breaking and horrifying, yet inspiring to see the things that people can overcome.
Another phenomenal read. I had just finished reading Educated and then I read this book.
I am amazed at the strength that so many people can find within themselves to persevere under circumstances beyond their control and find success going forward.
A truly inspiring read that will warm your heart.
An amazing true story!
The gold-standard for modern-day memoirs. The tender way Walls writes about abusive situations makes you feel sympathetic toward everyone involved — to an extent. This is a beautiful story of perseverance and what it means to be family.
A great story taken from real life. Good writing and great descriptions of family relationships and issues. Unique and sometiumes tragic characters.
This is one of my favorite books. The author is a great story teller and what a life she lived. If you ever get the chance to hear her speak, be sure to attend. She is a wonderful speaker in addition to being a wonderful writer.
Such a sad childhood and yet the author rose above it all.
Excellent true story. Book excellent, move not so
Unexpected. So many topics and perspectives. Great for conversations about the books.
Amazing story of a triumphal victory over a life influenced by parents who suffer from mental illness.
Some might find this book sad, but I saw it as witty, hard to put down, very good read.
Enjoyed the twists and turns of this story.
Very dark life.
Amazing writer of her childhood and growing up with disfunctional parents.
Good book!
This is the kind of book that defies all possible realities and blows your mind. It seems impossible that people can live in conditions and under circumstances such as those the Walls family endured—and willingly. Yet it isn’t impossible. It’s real and people do it! Sometimes the lives people choose are just unfathomable.
The most interesting …
This book will put your personal problems into perspective. The author lived an unbelievable life that will stay with you for years to come. I highly recommend this story to adults needing a reality check.
I read this a while back and I enjoyed the true story of a young girl growing up in poverty and making the most of her intelligence.
