Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts. MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, … is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.
The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.
The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

Great Book
The Glass Castle is an excellent memoir. It takes great skill from an author to make you feel truly frustrated and irritated. I felt Jeannette’s frustration with her parents and her hopefulness when she and her sister were able to get away in NY.
How such a dysfunctional family managed to survivev in strange ways is disturbing. The parents are free spirits, and the children learn to fend for themselves In unimaginable circumstances. A must read!
I thought this book was tragic in the life of the author even though some of it seemed normal to her. The thing about that though is that it seemed normal. While she lived through this, some memories were humorous to picture in your mind, it was disturbing at the same time. I applaud this author’s honest and courage to write her story, and her …
I was through once he threw her cat out of the car because it “didn’t travel well”.
I liked it.
I recommended and re-read this book recently for our Book Club since the haunting memories of the story has stayed with me since my first reading three years ago. Written from the true memories of a child to womanhood, of her extremely disfunctional parents and grandparents, it is difficult to imagine such a life. Although they were educated they …
A great book, but not for the faint of heart. A book about a highly dysfunctional family where serious abuse and neglect of children is an everyday occurrence.
This is a poignant story with sometimes unbelievable details of parental abuse. it was hard to understand how a mother could be so selfish and often disregard the needs of her children. However, the children learn to fend for themselves, escape the neglect and build lives for themselves, with the exception of the youngest child, who appears to …
I don’t think any of the suggested reasons why I liked this book fit. I thought that it was frustrating and a hard to believe true story about how her parents could be so disengaged and self centered and the children (most of them) could turn out so well and be, for the most part, either forgiving or adoring of the father, especially.
Inspirational story of the survival of an unusual childhood.
This book is the real life story of Jeannette Walls. it’s about her life living with and alcoholic father and a free spirited no back boned mother. This book is sure to make you cry at some point. I was totally sucked in and had to keep reading. You will hate characters and fall in love with characters and I recommend this book to anyone who is …
Great true story. Makes regular families seem normal!
An excellent memoir.
One of my all-time favorite books.
A true story of family and resilience.
A good book but some area seemed to repeat
How 4 wonderful children grew up in a dysfunctional family. Although these parents loved their children, they were irresponsible, self absorbed, and extremely neglectful. It is amazing how smart, and responsible and supportive they were to each other. I believe that this book should be mandatory reading in schools. It is a true survival story …
