“Readers who like to curl up during the long winter evenings and feel the delicious chill of fear running up and down their spines need only turn to The Glade to have all their expectations fulfilled.
The Glade is a horror story in the mould of Stephen King, and rendered the more so by its faint echoes of Pet Cemetery and the even stronger resonance of the pervasive malignancy of It.” … —Review by Brian O’Hare

I’m a huge fan of Stephen King so I couldn’t wait to read this after seeing the comparison. Although, “Pet Cemetery” isn’t one of my favorite Stephen King books, “The Glade” didn’t have in it what I disliked in Mr. King’s book but instead had the intrigue I did like. Helen and Geoff Wenstrop spent a holiday in a small village. They found some property, and against warnings not to purchase it, they did and built a house. Helen later goes there to die from cancer, but mysteriously recovers. I found myself reading late into the night to find out how Helen got to the point she did. I liked the story being told from two different time lines and eagerly awaited the moment they converged. The relationship between husband and wife was strained and a bit confusing–as were some of the other relationships. The landscape was its own character and added to the story. At times I found myself struggling to have much empathy for Helen and her decisions. But, there were many plot twists that I didn’t see coming after that. When the two story lines did meet up, I had many aha moments that changed my perspective of Helen and other characters while clearing the confusion. “The Glade” is a unique horror tale. I recommend this creepy story to those who love horror presented in a King-like fashion, with a bit of a romance thrown in.
A captivating and creepy story from Harmony Kent .
When Helen and Geoff Wenstrop find a peaceful plot of land while on holiday in the small village of Parkdean, they decide to buy it and build a house. Helen is terminally ill and wants to die in their new home, once there she miraculously recovers, however, there is a price to pay.
The book begins with Helen being arrested for her husband’s murder. From there we switch between the past and present discovering the circumstances leading to the arrest, and beyond, until they merge at the end.
The characters were all well-written, although there was one character, Helen’s ex, who seemed superfluous to the story. I lost some of my empathy for Helen around the middle of the book as I couldn’t relate to some of her actions and decisions, although she redeemed herself towards the end.
The author kept me gripped with the great storyline, the vivid descriptions and the ominous presence of the forest surrounding the glade. The story kept up a good pace through most of the book, and the various twists and turns kept me guessing right up to the final pages.
Why it caught my attention:
Whaaaat? I love the cover for this one, and am pulled in with questions running in my mind; who did Helen murder? did she actually do it? And, most importantly, what’s in the woods?
So glad I read it:
The Glade has been on my reading list for a while, and I wish I would’ve pushed it up in the list sooner. The story begins with an arrest of a distraught woman for killing her husband under strange circumstances. Then as the story unfolds, we learn what brought this couple to this point. There’s something evil in the forest that wants to destroy. This was a definite nail biter for me, and I love how dark the forest is, it made me nervous, wondering what was going to jump out at Helen and the others. If you’re looking for a great story with a well-balanced helping of lust and fear, definitely read this book.
Thanks Harmony for the beauty!
This is a good paranormal tale, with enough modern setting to help readers ground themselves. This really helps to make the odd things stand out. Other reviewers have discussed Helen’s journey at length, so I’ll stray a little from that.
There are a few too many characters here that don’t serve much purpose. I think combining a few of them would have helped the story flow better. Some of the characters make some illogical decisions on occasion, and there are many instances of coming and going from The Glade that didn’t feel necessary.
Having said that, Kent includes some vivid descriptions and I formed excellent visuals during my reading. The story ended well, and that’s the sign of a good story.
When I got this book to review, I had no idea what to expect but from the moment I started reading I was hooked!
The story starts off with Helen and her husband Geoff getting away from dealing with stress by holidaying in a nice little cottage and then discovering the glade. From that moment on they are sucked into the magic and mystery that the glade has to offer.
The story was fast paced enough to keep you wanting more but not overwhelmingly so that you felt the story was being rushed. Like I say I was hooked, and the suspense of not knowing what was going to happen next kept me going.
Suspense, mystery and fantasy this story has it all! There are so many twists and turns and you really get drawn into the characters emotions throughout the book. It was a brilliant read and I cant wait to see what else Harmony Kent hast offer.
