The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Lois Lowry … Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. This ebook includes a sample chapter of sequel Gathering Blue.

The first time I read this, I was in middle school and I hated it. Then I read it again after high school and I LOVED IT! I didn’t know it was a series until a few years after that either (knowing that, I suddenly understand why the ending was such a cliff hanger).
I enjoyed this story. It was captivating.
Captivating concept

An epitome type of book! I read this book in junior-high and the book is still one of my favorites.
I think this book is awesome
I recommend this masterpiece to anyone who’ll listen. I can’t sing Lois Lowry’s praises enough! Loved it!
It was great
i thought it was very interesting. i enjoyed it. i read in class.
The Giver is one of the many Dystopian books I have read and this one really made me stay up all night. This book is packed with emotions from sadness to excitement to fear, but continues to be a great adventure. A worthy read for sure!
I fell in love with Lois Lowery reading this book in the 8th grade. It touched so many subjects that were sensitive and depicted it so well and beautifully that I could not get enough of her books.
I like books that change me. This book is the kind that after reading it we see the world differently. It makes us appreciate trials. It helps us be grateful for differences. It helps us remember the importance of humanity over the desire for perfection and efficiency. It reminds us that love is the most desirable of all that life offers.
Has clif hangers and is very unique in its own way
The Giver is a simple yet moving read and the start to Lois Lowry’s quartet. This book was recommended to me by a classmate after a discussion about different types of communities. The community in The Giver is a utopia where everything and everyone is the same, everything is orderly, and everyone simply obeys. Life in the Community is simple, …
This book deserves the Newbery it got! In a world where everything is in Sameness, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the receiver, receiving memories from the giver. These memories contain fear, pain, happiness, and color. The only thing I don’t like about this book is the ending because I feel as though the author could have added more.
My students and I both loved this novel. It was a great read. We then compared/contacted the novel to the film! Recommended 4th grade+
Awesome book, !!
I just don’t like the dystopian genre, but the book was well written. Just not my taste.
Jonas has been chosen. What an honor he has received, but little does he know the pain involved with taking the job of the Giver. This book I have taught to middle school students, gives new and disturbing meaning to the word “release.” This dysphoric book should be read by all middle school children as they progress with Lord of the Flies and …
Lois Lowry blends science fiction and fantasy in a unique way with this great novel.
I think this book has a great plot! anyone 11 and up should try this out, it is definitely worth a go!
