The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Lois Lowry … Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. This ebook includes a sample chapter of sequel Gathering Blue.

A must read for everyone!
A superior thought-provoking story
I came across The Giver about fifteen years ago while teaching a high school English class. I read it leisurely over one weekend, enjoyed it, and found myself reflecting over it for several weeks.
The Giver won the 1994 Newbery Medal for most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. …
I was enthralled with this book. This should be required reading for all! Do not miss The Giver!
Lois Lowry is one of my favorite authors. All of her books have fantastic characters. They are very realistic and easy to relate to. This is not an exception. I found myself rooting for characters. Fantastic read!
I think it is a good book all together!!!!
I share books with upper elementary kids on a regular basis and have shred this one with several groups. The students stimulated to read it are always shocked by the darkest event but do indeed like the book.
This book is about one world but not a
different one. Is a very exciting book.
One of my favorites!
Like who couldn’t love this book?
Everyone has these periods when they do not want to feel anything.
Well, maybe not for everyone. To me, however, there are periods like this.
I read the Giver at the height of such a period.
A kind of time in which I wanted only to forget, to repress, and to ignore all sorts of parts of my life.
I read this book, and it was hard for me.
I had …
it is a very good book if you are looking for a drama
the end is not so good but the rest of it omg it is so good that that is the only book i will ever love 5 star
This allegory is beautiful, taking us on a journey of discover and illumination. So well written, it can be read by the young and old and understood on many levels.
I first read this book in 1995 when I was a 15-year-old high school freshman. It was required reading for my English class, and while I’ve always been an avid reader, I HATED the stuff they made us read in class. ‘The Giver’ however, proved to be different. I blew threw the entire book in two days, WELL ahead of the allotted reading time. I have never, in all the years that have past, forgotten this book. Sure, many of the finer points of the story faded away with time, as well as character names, and descriptions, but the gist of the story always stayed with me.
I decided it was finally time to re-read this, and I gotta say, it was just as powerful the second time around. I read this in one sitting as it was impossible to put down. I didn’t realize just how much of the story I’d forgotten, so I’m very glad I finally got around to re-reading it. I’m going to start ‘Gathering Blue’ this evening, followed by ‘Messenger’, two books I have not previously read. I have high expectations for them, but I am almost certain they won’t hold a candle to ‘The Giver’.
I absolutely recommend this book to kids and adults alike. It’s such an unforgettable story, and you better believe that when my son’s old enough, I’m going have him read this. I tried to think just what it is about this story that makes it so gripping, and for me, I think it’s the unknown, for both you and the main character Jonas. Jonas doesn’t know exactly what transpires to make his community run as smoothly as it does, yet neither does the reader since this is a society that is alien to us. Unlike most books that take place in the present or past, we kind of know the ins and outs of the community the book is set in, but with ‘The Giver’, we’re in the dark, just like Jonas. Everything he learns and feels is almost new to us as well…make sense? Ah, well, I tried! Overall, a GREAT book…PLEASE don’t miss out on it.
A book to get glued to! This book has Excellence on every page
This book is a must read! Although written for middle-school aged people, this book should be required reading for everyone! There are sequels as well, but this first one is by far the best!
“The Giver” by Lois Lowry is a book that shows a utopian and dystopian future. Completely different and emotionless, the community in which the book is based doesn’t know many of the concepts that are part of our daily lives nowadays, because all crises that happened in the past were hidden from society (climate change, death, starvation…). With climate control, people have never experienced snow or sunshine, they don’t know how adrenaline feels, because everything is safe; death and grief have never been heard of, and to them, love is a very vague term, that shouldn’t be used because it’s not precise, causing “communication issues”. Protected from everything, in order not to suffer, they follow the same routine, no one starves or goes through emotional and/or financial problems. But everything has a price, and not suffering means not feeling anything. This book makes us see life and the experiences that come with it in a completely different way, opening our eyes to understand why it is important to suffer and to love. Our conscience won’t expand if we don’t go through difficulties and challenges. That’s why above everything else in this world, it’s important to know what love means and experience it. With it, we become more human because love breaks all barriers and makes the impossible possible. No pain no gain.
Makes one think.
