I love this series! It is so relaxing to read about a group of strong women with a solid foundation of friendships in wartime England. I can’t wait to see Maureen spread her wings.
Reflects the era
WWII was devastating to London. This story shows how the women stayed strong and did their best to hold things together during that difficult time
Set right before WWII in London. I usually only read American Historical books, so this was a switch for me. The Girls of Mulberry Lane wasn’t too “British” for me. Started book 2 yesterday.
Easy read; a little historical info; more for young readers
I guess I should have realized, when I saw that this was part of a series, that it would not end neatly. There were lots of loose end, leaving room for the next book.
There wasn’t anything extraordinary about the book, but I really liked it. It was about regular people, their joys, their sorrows, their struggles; and it was just comfortable reading. I would recommend it.
Ended too abruptly – what’s next
It was a good book, although quite predictable.
Was sad to get to the last page of this one – warm & comfortable story, with very likeable characters! From the first page, I found myself getting tied up in their individual situations because they were realistically portrayed and the writing style makes you feel you are there in the middle of the community. Lots of great historical detail interspersed throughout. Life was hard for folks living in war-time London, but this book takes the relationships of family and community, and without sugar-coating things, shows how they coped with hardships and trials. The ending loosely ties things up but leaves a lot to segue into a sequel. Can’t wait to read it! 🙂
A different view on war time In Great Britain Great characters. Fun to read
Interesting characters and rich detail of the time.
I highly recommend this book. The two main character, Peggy, a married middle aged loved pub owner, and Maureen, a younger woman who has set her life aside to run her bullying father’s shop. There are wonderful secondary characters, friends and family who make this wonderful. The story begins shortly before WWII and continues into the war. It takes us into the changes of the lives of the people of the Mulberry Lane neighborhood, but primarily Peggy, Maureen and their families. I could not put the book down and there were some surprises.
Not my favorite…….mostly because i am not British and most of the names of dishes, slang and everything are written from a British middle class view. I believe a Britisher would enjoy this book.
Love This Book….A WINNER!
I truly enjoy this writer and her books about England during the war.
Very well thought out and so realistic. Characters are so human, not superficial. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books based on real life.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and most of the characters. I would liked to have seen a few healthy men in it but I guess that was part of the story line, women dealing with life in the late 1930’s in the poor section of London, and not having lived back then perhaps it’s true there weren’t that many good men around..
Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
not my kind of book
