Dramatic and tense–the first in the Knox and Sheppard series will keep you reading if you’re into police procedurals with a crime-fighting sisters twist. For fans of Rizzoli and Isles and Dean Koontz’s Jane Hawk.
I wasn’t sure at first, the book initially seemed a little meandering and the character’s thoughts at times confused me, especially when the two sisters were together. However, it slowly turned into a brilliant read. I came to care about the characters and thought the plot was original and interesting. The ending was both tense and moving.
Highly recommend to mystery and crime readers.
THE GIRLS ACROSS THE BAY by Emerald O’Brien has an excellent red herring in the storyline that I didn’t see coming until BAM! I’d been sideswiped. I love it when that happens. A great lineup of characters — O’Brien had me rooting for the underdog. I recommend this book.

The story The Girls Across the Bay (The Knox and Sheppard Mysteries Book 1) by Emerald O’Brien is a wonderful mystery book. I was hooked from the very beginning and I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the last page. It is a story that had me turning pages in order to find out what happens next. I enjoyed reading about the characters of Madigan Knox and Grace Sheppard. They became sisters when they lived in a foster home and a strong bond formed between them. They live through a nightmare and then they are split up. Years later they are reunited in a small coastal town. When a young woman is found dead Grace is the one that investigates the crime. What happens next opens old wounds and secrets are revealed. What happened to the young woman who was found dead? Is the bond between Grace and Madigan strong enough to withstand the rumors and secrets? How much danger are Grace and Madigan in? Read this book to find out. This is a story that takes you on a journey that keeps you guessing. The book has scenes that are intense. There is suspense and mystery. I grew to care about Grace and Madigan with each chapter that I read. They had been through so much and I couldn’t help but have empathy for them. There is also emotional moments and dialogue. Don’t miss out on a story that will have you on the edge of your seat. It is a story I would highly recommend reading.
Fantastic characters a real page turner, I couldn’t put it down! It kept me guessing all the way through. Would love to read more in this series! Give it s try, you won’t be disappointed!
Characters and story line easy to follow and great read.
Fabulous new to me detective series by Emerald O’Brian. How did these books get under my radar? This was book one and can wait to read books 2-4 following these two sisters(foster). One is a detective and the other an investigative reporter.
Think Rizolli and Isles…really enjoyed this great twisty mystery. (RUMOR HAS IT BOOK 5 MIGHT BE IN THE WORKS)
One sister is a reporter, the other is a cop. Their history is complicated, but their bond is strong. This town is filled with secrets…watch your back.
This book had great characters and a thrilling storyline. You think you have it figured out about halfway through and then the storyline takes a complete 180 on you! Kept me turning the pages well into the night!
Didn’t really care for either of the sisters. And, not sure law enforcement works this way in real life, but what do I know, it is Canada, maybe it is different there?
The sisters trust no one, not even each other, and feel free to lie just whenever. There are three more books in this series, but I don’t think I will be reading them. Even making allowances for their childhoods, I don’t like these “sisters”.
I loved the girls, Madigan and Grace. They met in the same foster care home they were in. Grace is a police detective and Madigan trying to make it has a reporter.
Madigan is in a relationship, runs when someone gets close.
Grace has her problems, too. Good story line.
Loved the story and loved the twist.
A good read – realistic complicated relationships . . .
The story starts with two foster girls who felt like sisters and what they went through. Then the story goes to their adult lives. Great story! I couldn’t stop reading till I knew how it ends!!
What great insights into the lives of those placed in foster care!
I loved this book it kept you guessing the whole time I’ve already ordered the 2 following ….
A little hard to follow as the point of view kept changing.
Great story about fosters who became close sisters of the heart. One a policewoman, the other a reporter as adults, they have to reconnect and untangle the events they experienced as children.
It was an unusual storyline, but kept me throughly engaged.
The things people do to each other is sickening, but it made a good read.
