The Girlfriend is a taut and wickedly twisted debut psychological thriller—a novel of subtle sabotage, retaliation, jealousy and fear, which pivots on an unforgivable lie, and examines the mother–son–daughter-in-law relationship in a chilling new light.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long, long time. I loved The Girlfriend!
This was indeed a unique and compelling read. The Girlfriend is told from three of the character’s viewpoints. Laura, the mother, and Cherry, the girlfriend, are our main characters, and they both love Daniel. Laura and Daniel have a very special mother/son bond, and along comes Cherry who quickly steals Daniel’s heart. Cherry craves the kind of lifestyle Daniel and Laura have, and Laura suspects Cherry is in it for just that. The story goes pretty twisted after that. Even in the last pages, you are going to cheer or dis our main characters. Great story.
I listened to the audio version of this book and loved every second of it. Highly recommend!
Good read!
This was really good and as the mother of sons it was frightening to see the manipulations. Yikes. I really recommend this.
This book was interesting. Makes you think – is this something I would/ could ever do?
great was not expecting the ending
Quick moving page turner. Couldn’t wait to be able to pick the book up again. The ending was unexpected. Highly recommend.
A book you can’t wait to get back to.
A great British thriller! An over possessive, well heeled mother finds herself up against the devious girlfriend of her handsome intern son. The story unfolds all the twisted secrets behind the facade of perfection that having money can provide.
This story really held my interest, and I enjoyed the character development of Laura and Cherry. The one thing that troubled me was that I found Laura’s obsessive behavior almost as shocking as Cherry’s……she was older and her behavior really provoked the worst in Cherry. Had Laura kept her nose out of her sons relationship he might have figured things out on his own and moved on. Daniel seemed to be an intelligent and level headed young man. Great story, if the lesson is that controlling mothers can inflict horrible consequences on their sons by denying their children the opportunity to make mature life decisions on their own.
A page turner of a read for sure, and found myself rooting first for the mother and then for the girlfriend, as the story unfolded. The author kept pulling on my heart strings as I felt empathy for a Mom as her son is grown, and her marriage is collapsing, and now maybe she will find a friend in her son’s new love.
Then we have the girlfriend, and you find her a very smart girl that born into a different family would have achieved a lot, but she is poor, and not happy about it. Of course, there are other ways to achieve what she wants, but then Daniel becomes her obsession.
I really didn’t see the ending that happened, but this was quite the ride, and pitted against each other the mother and the girlfriend were quite the pair.
A book that is going to keep you up late reading to find the answers, and when you do, surprises abound.
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
Full of hateful people and a plot that went nowhere
An original and chilling portrayal of twisted relationships.
A juicy thriller and utterly compulsive reading.
Excellent story line.
This book blew me away. It was hard to put down. As a mom with a son in med school it was scary.
A suspenseful family drama that explores the relationship between a mother and her son’s girlfriend. Both women are manipulative and determine to be the most important person in Daniel’s life. Who will win? Laura, the possessive mother who has it all, or Cherry, the girlfriend who is willing to do whatever it takes to marry a rich man?
I enjoyed this book very much. It was well-written, chilling, and had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Didn’t finish it. It took too long to get to the core of the matter. character development drove me crazy for some reason. may try again later
Dealing with a psychopath.. twists and turns but I was surprised at how everything ended too perfectly.
