From the New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars, a sweeping bestseller of love and loss, deftly weaving two journeys from World War I France to present day London. Paris, World War I. Sophie Lefèvre must keep her family safe while her adored husband, Édouard, fights at the front. When their town falls to the Germans, Sophie is forced to serve them every evening at her hotel. From … every evening at her hotel. From the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie’s portrait—painted by her artist husband—a dangerous obsession is born.
Almost a century later in London, Sophie’s portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a wedding gift from her young husband before his sudden death. After a chance encounter reveals the portrait’s true worth, a battle begins over its troubled history and Liv’s world is turned upside all over again.

Sigh… this book. I read it for a book club that I am a member of and I just loved it! You seriously cannot put it down.
The book takes you from present to past, which might throw some off at first but trust me… KEEP READING. You will NOT be disappointed.
This was a different choice for me; I don’t normally read historical fiction books. I am so glad I did! This quickly became of of my favorite books and will definitely be one that I will read again. I loved that it went between the “then” and “now” of the two women and wove their stories together. Amazing read!!
Just finished it and LOVED it!
A well crafted story about wartime stolen art. Very informative with a story told in two different eras. Thumbs up!
Enjoyed this book tons!
this story was different from most books I’ve read. it was interesting. I enjoyed reading it.
Loved it – great story – hard to put down.
A new take on an old story line. Well done!
My favorite book by Jojo Moyes!
Excellent story line with a moral dilemna.
Simply wonderful! Couldn’t put it down!
Excellent read- different from other books I have read by this author.
I love historical fiction. This jumped between world warIII and present day.
Kept me thoroughly engaged. I also learned a bunch of new things!
I liked it , except there was too much graphic sex, which l felt did not seem necessary.
Enjoyable!
I almost didn’t buy this book because of some negative reviews about Liv’s character. So glad I decided to try it anyway because of it partially being set during WWI.
This is a REALLY good book. I felt the the pain of both Liv & Sophie as they came to life on the pages. They were both wonderful characters and I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Could not put the book down!
Very hard to put down once it got going.
One of her best.
