A heart-wrenching story from the bestselling author of The Throwaway Children. Thirteen-year-old Lisa has escaped from Nazi Germanyon the Kindertransport. She arrives in London unable to speak a word of English, her few belongings crammed into a small suitcase. Among them is one precious photograph of the family she has left behind. Lonely and homesick, Lisa is adopted by a childless couple. But … is adopted by a childless couple. But when the Blitz blows her new home apart, she wakes up in hospital with no memory of who she isor where she came from. The authorities give her a new name and despatch her to a children’s home.
With the war raging around her, what will become of Lisa now?
Can’t wait for the sequel? The Married Girlsis out now!

Great, believable characters in different settings inWW II.
I loved this book
I truly enjoyed this from beginning to end. Many nights I stayed up to read ‘just one more chapter’
Very well written. Sad it ended. VERY good story.
The story takes place in London during World War II. The author makes you feel as if you are there, experiencing the bombing, etc. The courage of the young Jewish girl being sent to England all alone and leaving her family behind in Germany was sad. Her bravery was amazing and so was the kindness of the English people. I lived in London for 3 years from 1992-95, so this book was like going back for a visit during a different time period. I also recommend the sequel “The Married Girls.” I loved the characters.
Well- written, compelling historical fiction
GOOD READ
Such strong characters very realistic
Highly recommend
History inspired with situations that are credible, I enjoyed this easy read. While, the author reminds the reader of the reality of the ugly side of human kind, there is a lot of what is also good in people. The characters are easy to like and to sympathize with.
This is another book I have just read recently and I loved it —it had some tragedy in it, but it was true to life –so it wasn’t always sunny and bright –it was one to didn’t want to put down —had to keep going to see what was happening next and always hoping for the best. Really loved the story.
A wonderful book about a time that is hard to believe occurred. I would recommend this book for any age group.
Very well written and a very good book
Great story
A nice story. Heartbreaking war stories. Makes you appreciate life today.
The book gives very good insight into the lives of people in England during the Blitz of London during WWII, with special focus on children either orphaned or evacuated.
I couldn’t put it down. So many characters to follow. I really cared about the characters and the twists and turns in their lives. I enjoyed the historical aspect and recommend it for anyone interested in the lives of those affected by the Second World War.
I enjoyed this book as it provided information from a survivors perspective of what it was like to live during WW 2. Although I don’t believe it’s a true story it could actually be close to one. You really were able to identify with the characters and gave me a better perspective on the difficulty people in Europe faced during and after the war.
interesting information on what being a refugee is like
Really enjoyed this one. It shines a light on a small, rarely mentioned group of people whose lives were upended by WWII
