very different from others I have read, information I did not know, a wonderful book
I recommended it to my book group, we’re reading it in October!
Had difficulty putting the book down to do other things. Learned of another American immigrant situation that I’d never heard of. I recommend it.
Beautiful story of two women from two different worlds.
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It was heart wrenching, emotionally draining, and a beautiful love story.
Historical fiction – China
I liked author moving from current time characters and past characters. It was enlightening-never knew of the serious hurtful things the early Chinese suffered when they came to America
5 stars
This book follows the courage of a young woman in difficult circumstances to show that we all struggle and have coping mechanisms.
Really opened my eyes to the plight of the Chinese in the North West during the early years of the 1900 century. Very moving book.
One of the best books I have ever read! I could hardly put it down to see what would happen in this girl’s life next! Contains history plus it is realistic to the times it is about! A great must read!!!!!
Historical fiction about Seattle and the islands offshore during the 1880’s and present day. Very entertaining as well as informative. I had trouble putting it down ; finished it in 2 days. Highly recommended!
It recalls another terrible tragedy in America’s past. When will we learn live with each other peacefully?
Wish there was a sequel
The most depressing book I’ve read in a long time. Kept waiting for one thing good to happen, but that never happened . I wish I hadn’t spent time reading it. Every time I see the book, a cloud of gloom surrounds me.
It was written like a cozy novel. To many coincidences. The subject matter was interesting the characters less so.
I learned a lot about the struggles of the Chinese who lived in America in the late 1800’s. I had no idea about the prejudice that existed toward Asians at that time. There are two womens’ stories – one from the 1800’s and the other is present-day and the book goes back and forth between the two. It is a good read.
Never knew this part of our nation’s history. Great story line.
I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down and on one night, I read well passed my self-imposed deadline of 1AM until 3AM. The story flips between characters in the very early 1900’s and present day and the turns aren’t at all jarring, mostly because the characters in both eras are dramatic and engaging.
The story was a history lesson, one I never heard in the 12 years that I lived in the PNW, over the course of three assignments during the mid 70’s, mid 80’s and late 90’s. While a history buff, the early history of the Chinese, after they’d built the railroads, was never discussed. What I learned shamed but also enriched me, and the character Mei Lien will stay with me for life.
This is an absolutely beautifully written book, rich in characters, plot and landscapes true to the areas. I recommend it to everyone tired of cozy mysteries, tongue-in-cheek characters and formula-written prose. This book, The Girl Who Wrote in Silk, will steal you away on the most intriguing journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it. The author touches upon the subject of racial tensions and the hatred that some have for others unlike themselves, but the tenacity and creativity of an Asian woman is inspiring.
